Shaq to Pam State

I almost feel sorry for sac. They are sooooooo desperate for annnnnyyyyyy national coverage (not including the illegal application of nonstick cooking spray).

But rather than do what they should to get it (build actual DI facilities, win consistently, etc), they make horrible decisions for their program. Look, as anyone knows, I'm alllllllllllll for moving fbs. But there's a right way and a...well, desperate sac way.

I mostly agree. But do not also rule out "serendipity" with regard to the Shaq thing. I very much doubt that they actively pursued his son for basketball ... but it worked out that way. They'd be idiots to not follow up that stroke of luck.

Beyond that, the football program is doing its best to recruit players out of the portal ... as they should. But California is broke – by any normal definition. I was born in the state, and have many relatives and friends there. They don't bother to complain any more about the taxes, etc ... but they aren't ready to face the uncertainty and hassle of moving.

So Sac State has a rough row to hoe in terms of upgrades, etc. Yet, oddly enough, I think they'll do all right (unlike UIdaho and UConn, and other notorious failures). Why? Because, as others have pointed out, greater Sacramento is a sports area. From what I can tell, they've always suffered from the thought that Fresno has big-time (FBS) football and they don't. Major NIL money will soon flow their way, as an FBS program, and I fully expect some big donor(s) to step in and fund some major facility upgrades.

They don't seem to be doing quite as poorly as you indicate. They've already committed $95-100 million for a new stadium in the next two to three years. Additionally as of October '24, they had raised almost $60 million (with a goal of $75 mill) in NIL funds for the transition to FBS.

They clearly will not have a problem raising capital.

“Committed” looks like an overstatement. They announced plans in fall to build to 25,000 capacity. In January the president said would spend $2.5 million in first phase. Looks like they haven’t raised the funds yet. Phase 2 would do seating. Phase 3 expected to start between 2027-2029. https://statehornet.com/2025/01/sac-state-stadium-construction-plans-fbs-luke-wood/
