Shannon Cate twice the player Morales is

To argue anyone in the same league as Cate is ridiculous. I watched Shannon play Delvon Anderson 1 on 1. Though she couldn't stop him defensively he was unable to D her up as well. I can remember the other mens basketball players watching & razzing him for it. On top of that she was 6'1 shot 44% from 3 point land for her CAREER. She average 3.6 asst & 7.6 rebounds for her career to go along with a 22 point/game avg her soph, junior & senior years. Shannon almost single handedly lead them to a 2nd round win over USC who had the most dominant womens college player in history, Lisa Leslie. She came back after halftime after dislocating her shoulder to score over 40 points. THERE IS NO QUESTION SHANNON IS & ALWAYS WILL BE THE BEST LADY GRIZ PLAYER EVER. Shannon's career points are 474 more than Hollie Tyler's 2nd place. Shannon has an entire seasons worth of points over Hollie. If you watched both players there is no way you can make this argument.

Shannon has 3 of the top 5 scoring seasons & is #1, 2 of the top 10 field goal % seasons, 3 of the top 4 scoring avg seasons & is #1, 2 of the top 4 3 point % seasons & is #1, 3 of the top 5 field goals made seasons, 3 of the top 5 free throws made & is #1, # 6 all time for rebound avg in a season, 2 of the top 10 free throw % seasons, 2 of the top 10 rebounding seasons, Shannon has 8 of the 10 highest scoring games & 18 of the top 33.

Not only was she amazing to watch play but her stats more than back her up. Don't even try to argue this post or you will look like an idiot

Time will tell............always does.

I remember that USC game. If she hadn't dislocated shoulder, I think she could have scored 60.

I believe Shannon dislocated it several times in that game, and popped it back in place herself. Mandy is just getting started in her career. It doesn't really matter who is considered the greatest does it? I think the more important thing is they both are Lady Griz.

Fact is the younger generation closer to Morales will remember her. The older fans that experienced both will form their own opinions. I feel priveleged to have watched both. As of now, very true Shannon is the bar that all Lady Griz is measured by, and will always be known as the 1st great LG. However, that is not to say that Morales or future LG's will set the bar higher. It is quite an accomplishment for Morales to be mentioned in the same breathe as Shannon.

I am sure if anyone were to talk to either, Mandy would say she is flattered by the comparisons. Likewise, as a coach Shannon has to be elated that any LG she coaches is accomplishing as much as Mandy is. Either could care less who thinks what as to who is/was better in their career. In this Generation, Mandy will be considered the best. In Shannon's generation she will always be the best. Anyone could argue either side right now with legitimacy. However, Mandy's career has just begun. If she stays healthy, she may set the bar higher for future LG's.

LG fans are fortunate to have experienced both gracing the LG program. I will not argue for either, at this stage it is looking as if it would be an endless arguement. :thumb: Meanwhile, I will enjoy watching Mandy playout her career, and prepare for Shannon taking over for Robin when he chooses to hang up the whistle. Would it not be great to have Morales assist Shannon in the next 10 years? Great job ladies, and thanks for the memories!

The first sign you are over the hill is when you can't understand the music kids are listening to. The second sign is when a friend's kid signs with your alma mater. I'll be at the game tonight, hoping Lauren Beck gets in. On the way over to Missoula this morning I tried to think through how I might try to explain to her how proud I am that she is wearing the uniform of a program I've been following for 23 years. I gave up at Ovando. Words fail me.

I am lucky to have watched them both play. I really wish Cate redshirted her senior season because if she did the 1992-93 team would definitely made sweet 16 with a Cate that was healthy.

But Statistically Mandy is already of Cate. Mandy has the highest average scoring for a freshman as a Lady Griz, better than Cate's freshman year. Barring injury, Mandy will have a great career as a Lady Griz player and I will have the privilege of watching the best two Lady "Griz players ever.

And to bring this thread up defending Cate must mean the poster is really worried that Mandy is better than Cate. At this point in Mandy's career, no Mandy is not. But there is only one direction for Mandy to go and that is up. She is going to get better and better.

But Cate, being a Lady Griz player and coach, I am sure she is hoping for Mandy to be better than her. Because that would mean Lady Griz are just going to be better.

too early to make any real comparison, maybe in a year or two...but one observation to my view, having watched both I think Mandy appears to be a better team player.

I appreciate your enthusiasm over athletic abilities that have been associated with U of M programs, but I seem to recall that S.C. had only about 26 points in the game against USC. I only 'wish' that she had forty. Interestingly though, USC defeated S. F. Austin in their next game before losing to eventual NCAA Champion Stanford in the Regional Championships that year. If UM defeated USC they could have reached the 'Final 8" that year. Maybe further.
to go along with a 22 point/game avg her soph, junior & senior years

Even last years Media Guide had career statistics showing an average 0f 20.3 points a game in 1989-90 & 22.3 in 1990-91 with an average of 23.3 in 1991-92. Perhaps you're speaking of her three year average of 21.8 ppg with 1,860 points in 85 games?

I used to work with a guy before he retired that grew up a couple blocks away from where a thousand acre dairy farm resides in Cheatham County near Ashland City (at least that's what he said, he was a TarHeels fan so I enjoyed winning a six pack betting on Weber St. a while back); I don't think Tennessee Volunteer fans, yet alone Connecticut Huskies fans, would belittle the futures of their respective programs by stifling team efforts by individual glorifications. Both programs have had numerous 'All-Americans' & each is probably well respected in their own individual accomplishments, enough so to say that perhaps Lisa Leslie may have been a very good player in her time but there are certainly others that are also quite deserving. You don't take the NC three years in a row without some kind of talent.

After watching Mandy last night, all I could say was WOW and the last time I did that was when Shannon Cate was playing. Obviously Shannon was better, but she had 4 years to prove her value. Mandy is a real talent and IMHO would start for all but a handfull of teams in the country, where as Shannon would have started for about every team during her playing day. But women's BB has really improved and Mandy is going up against better talent. If she had stayed at ASU, she would probably be starting for a top 10 team. It is too early to say whether Mandy will elevate her game even more, but my money is on her to do so. Man it was a blast to watch her last night.

The Lady Griz played USC in front of less than 1,000 fans. The game in Missoula would have drawn 9,000+ in the old Dahlberg Arena.

An interesting note about Shannon. Her top scoring efforts came her Jr and Sr seasons. Shannon scorched Weber State for 41 in 1991. She had 39 twice, against Idaho and msu. Shannon put 38 on Cal, along with 36 on 4 other teams. She went over the 30 point barrier many more times. It looks like Mandy's name is going to be right along side Shannon's in the record book before she is done.

The beautiful thing about it is they are both Montana grown and great people.

In today's Missoulian Mandy's teammate had this to say:

Johanna Closson connected on both of her 3-point attempts and finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and a selection to the all-tournament team. She believes that the play of Morales has elevated the game of the entire team.

“She makes everyone around her better,” Closson said. “It's amazing what she can make people do by getting other teammates shots and then she's just amazing herself. I fell really privileged to be able to play with Mandy.”
