Shanae is a 5-10 true freshman guard from Browning. Because her mother was in school at MSU last year, she played for Bozeman High.
Shanae is the surprise of the year. She has a superb shot, understands the game, and plays with the anticipation of a coach on the floor.
I hear that she has had knee problems (not sure on that), but if she can remain healthy, she will be very special. I think she is one of those "once in a decade" players for the Lady Griz. For those of you have watched her and who know hoops, does she have any weaknesses? I wonder what Selvig tells her she has to do better because I can't see it. For sure he won't mess with her shot. Her quick 3-point shot reminds me of Sonja Rogers but Shanae starts her shot from higher so it is quicker and tougher to block.
Yes, she has knee problems which she missed a game or two already due the knee problem (likely related to the acl). For what I have seen so far, she has a better shot than Sonya Rogers. Gilham is the best freshman to come here since Mandy Morales, imo. Julie Deming is the career leader in 3pt shooting % (shot only 175 3 pointers but is still statistically significant). Gilham, if staying healthy (knock on wood), appears good enough to beat that stat. Heck, maybe even beat Sonya's Single season 3 point shooting %.
I haven't checked the stats in the past, but I do believe yesterdays game was the best one for shooting in the past 3 years (47.3% for the game), maybe 4 years. Now that http://www.montanagrizzlies.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is no longer around, cannot check old archives of games beyond the past 2 years anymore. that is unfortunate. Whoever manages http://www.gogriz.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; needs to bring all the stats from that old site over. the old site had stats from late 90s (well, the 90s games only had the schedules with the scores of each game).
Last year, only 2 players averaged over 40% in shooting for the year. This year there are 5 players. the 2 players that averaged over 40% last year were Baker and Rickman. Rickman has so far improved her shooting this year improving from 41% last year to 52% this year. but Baker is not shooting as well as she did last year, but it is still early in the season. She is shooting 41% now compared to 44.9% last year. If yesterdays game is an indicator of what is to come, her stats should improve. For the Lady Griz to succeed, Baker needs to shoot like she did in yesterdays game.
Off topic, the game against EWU will be interesting. Former Lady Griz point guard, Lexi Nelson, who transferred to EWU after her first year with the Lady Griz, is the leading scorer for the Eagles. She still turns the ball over a lot, which is why I believe Selvig favored Tory Hill, who has a positive assist to turnover ratio, which is significantly better than Lexi Nelson's assist to turnover ratio. Nelson is shooting better than Hill is (including 3 point %) at this time. Maybe if tory ever gets hot, that will change.
