Selvig

He looked good tonight. No whining and better results. Fought hard for a couple rebounds too. We looked better than most nights. Come on Friday

My opinion is don't F with a good thing. They tried to bulk him up and he suffered from it. He has an extremely unique body-type, and comparing him to other 7' footers is pointless. His offense will never be the typical 7' big-body post-up style. I think he could do it, but he is so much more vaulable outside. He is an unstoppable force shooting 3-pointers if and when (like now) he is hot. Almost nobody can block a 7' footer with his long arms shooting a 3. He is the best passing big-man I've ever seen at any level. He is a freak talent. Don't change a thing and enjoy the ride!

good post :thumb:

Grizbacker...did you ever hear of Bill Walton or Larry Bird? Both could pass the ball pretty well. And if we're going to commit that Selvig's really just an outside player, then Magic was pretty "big" and seems he also threw some passes. Yes, Selvig can pass. Best ever at any level not sure.

good post.

Agreed. Basically what I said earlier except I thought he could have bulked up a little in four years. You are probably right though because his bone structure is smaller.

Last night he and Hutch had a significant defensive effect on PSUs big man, Lozeau - held him to 4 pts (he was averaging almost 11) so I agree with Zirg, appreciate what he contributes to this year's Griz team and quit wishing for something that isn't going to happen.

Go Griz!

Maul'em!

Given that he's a senior, I totally agree that we should accept what he is and "enjoy the ride." In fact, it's likely to do more harm than good to try to turn him into something he's not.

As to your other point, which I have italicized. With all due respect, if you think Derek is the best-passing big man you've ever seen, then you can't have watched much basketball. As another poster said, Bill Walton and Larry bird were both big men who could pass pretty damn good.

So: Best-passing big man? Nope.

Best-passing big man you’ve ever seen ... perhaps.

I’ve only seen highlights, but -- statistically -- one of the best-passing big men, this season, is a guy who plays for Georgetown: Henry Sims, 6-10, 242 lbs, a senior. He averages 12.1 point per game, but also 3.8 assists (vs 2.2 turn-overs). So far this season, he has 45 assists (vs 26 TOs). For a big man that’s a ton of assists. (He also has 18 blocked shots.) He’s not only good with the pass-back to the three-point line, he’s really good at getting the ball to back-door cutters.

By comparison, Selvig has 25 assists (unfortunately, almost balanced by 22 turn-overs), for a 2.5 per game average.

Ok, you busted me. I guess I should clarify it to "best passing big man I've seen in person" and I am a bit too young to remember Bill Walton very well at all and am admittedly not an NBA expert. I did go to an NBA game Monday night, but I have seen a lot more D1 b-ball than NBA. I have been a season-ticket holder and/or every home-game attender for (2 different) D1 teams since 1982. Bird I don't consider a "big man", and maybe I am exagerating a bit. I am sure there have been a few other big men with great passing skills, but Derek has to be close. The point is, he has special skills (shooting and passing) for a 7' footer which we are wisely utilizing.

What was up with Derek against Eastern? Not many shots, no points, and almost fouled out.

My online feed kept stuttering and dropping out, so I couldn't get any sense of the flow of the game. But in what I could see, it seemed like he was being out-quicked and then started lunging to get back into plays. But he should have had a field day shooting over the top. (Defensive frustration spilled over into his shooting?)

Hopefully, this just one of those bad days any player can have.

Ward opened up real hot and so Selvig was dishing to him a lot early. I think Ward had 10 of the first 18 points for the Griz. As the first period wore on the Griz moved to more of a perimeter game instead, Selvig missed a few 3 pointers and really didn't shoot much from there on out. In the second Selvig picked up fouls pretty quickly which rattled him, he went out, came back in, got one more, came out again with four fouls and watched for quite sometime. The fouls seemed pretty ticky-tacky to me.

Today we'll have to be happy with his five assists.
That's okay, but he also had three turnovers -- he now has 25 TO to go with 30 assists. Need to fix that.

But I'm happy with the win -- with some different guys stepping up. The best part was how the coach and players made half-time adjustments and contained Eastern's offense in the second half.
