"For Selvig, Success Came at a Price"

"That’s part of what makes it a difficult job," Montana 24-year assistant coach Shannon Schweyen said. "It’s not like some of these other places that are chartering back the night of the game. It’s not easy getting in and out.

"There’s often times I’ve been on a bus and thought, ‘I’m exhausted. How the heck does (Selvig) do this year after year, night after night?’ He just always approaches everything with such an upbeat attitude. He certainly never let the girls know it was getting to him. He was really good in that respect."

Devoting as much time as Selvig did to the Lady Griz becomes more of a sacrifice when there's a wife, children and grandchildren in the mix. There were subtle hints toward the end of this past season that Selvig was ready to spend more time with family.

"One thing that always stood out to me," Lady Griz post Alycia Sims related, "was how Rob, who, on a side note, struggled with technology, was always FaceTiming his granddaughter.

"Rob would come wandering through the gym turning the camera around to show her what the girls were up to. Knowing how much family means to him, I think it was somewhat upsetting for him that his Lady Griz family ate up so much of his time."
Pfahler believes Selvig's ability to judge character on the recruiting trail is one reason he enjoyed consistent success.

"He tended to recruit players and girls who he trusted, who he felt like were good people," she asserted. "I feel like that’s why the program has been such a strong program. He recruits people that are good people and work hard and want to win.

"And when you're Lady Griz, you don’t just want to win because you’re competitive. You want to win for Rob because of how much hard work and dedication he put into the program."

"Grateful Selvig salutes his players, assistants"

So consumed was Selvig with this week's difficult decision that he forgot something important -- or so he claimed in a line that had the crowd laughing out loud.

"Julie said, 'Now did you tell your wife what time the press conference is?' Selvig shared, referring to Julie Tonkin, program coordinator for the UM women's and men's basketball teams. "I said, 'Oh my God, I didn't tell her I was retiring!'

"Emotional Selvig Bids Goodbye"

After every year you're feeling a little bit like, uh, man, you need to get a break," Selvig said. "There's not as many breaks anymore. I'm telling you. Recruiting is nonstop.

"... I don't feel right feeling like I can't go down there fired up every day like they deserve. I gotta be there. I just started feeling like if I don't have that, it's somebody else's turn."

Summer recruiting, in particular, had lost its allure for Selvig.

"I'd see the girls and just tell myself, I don't want to do this," he offered. "I didn't go recruiting in July. I've been sitting in gyms in July for a lot of years. It felt like I didn't want to do it. I wasn't getting pumped."

Montana is left with a gaping hole in its athletic department. Haslam wants to move quickly, making a head coach hire by the start of the school year.

"I would be crazy not to look internally," he said. "Certainly for me not to take a strong hard look at Shannon (Schweyen), I'd be foolish not to do so."

Schweyen is the most prolific scorer in Lady Griz history and has been Selvig's assistant coach for 24-plus years. While on a recruiting trip in California this week, she confirmed she's interested in the head coaching job but reluctant to comment further out of respect to Haslam and the process.

"I think I told Kent (in March) that if this does happen," Selvig said, referring to his retirement, "it would sure be nice if Trish (Duce) or Shannon ended up doing it. They've been in the program a long time

Shannon will be named very shortly, she is already out "recruiting" assistants.

I already saw his press release, and he didn't have four employees.

On the other hand, thanks for trolling. We expect nothing different.

Serious question....do you put out a press release every time you have a bowel movement.....you do realize that they will put one out when they hire a coach......

I'm pretty sure they did. And we are still waiting for the press release. But thanks for your usual astute observations. Your compulsive need to troll is noted.

I'm just about sure it's "going" to be announced. Your predictive skills are awesome.

Stitt's hiring was announced before the BOR "signed off." Just in case you need something to chew on besides your thumb, the hire was announced "pending approval by the Board of Regents."

See how that works?

They don't have to wait for Board of Regents approval to make an announcement. That was a key example of why you were wrong, again, and a clown. Just as Shannon's hire was finally confirmed. Yes, "hires" have to be approved, but they are still "hires." And, for a sports organization with a strong connection with its fans, announced.
