Selvig needs to step up

With the griz going into the weekend shorthanded I hope Derek Selvig steps up his game. He's been playing better compared to last year but I still think he's soft. We need him to man up and show some toughness. GO GRIZ

:?: Would some one come on here who watched Derek Selvig play high school basketball and tell us what they saw back then. He seems to be a good passer and can get around real well on defense for a fella his size. He has made a few threes but does not appear to be at ease shooting it underneath and at this point I am not sure we want to see a lot more of those threes unless you know somthing I do not. Did he score it in high school and where was he underneath or outside? :?:

He is playing through an injury that may bother him all season. From what I understand, he is not able to fully participate in practices. I don't think being "soft' is the issue with Derek. I think he showing a lot of courage. I also expect to see a lot of Ward tonight.

Under normal circumstances, I have no doubt we would be seeing much better stats and minutes from Selvig. Up until seeing him play in person at Denver, I had a few doubts and questions about his play as well. I was so very wrong in those doubts and questions I had. He is playing very very hurt, and had Hutchison not got hurt this year, Selvig should have already had surgery. Surgery is definitely in the works for him.

Until he gets surgery and rehabs, I do not expect much more of him. His foot is limiting his movement, jumping, and his whole game. Last year he may have been soft. This year though, he works as hard as he can all the time. He is not soft, but limited due to injury. For those doubting this kid, watch him before, during, and after the game. You will see what he has to do just to be on the floor the minutes he is. After the game, he will be heavily taped and/or in a walking cast. He will be limping and you too will feel some of his pain.

Applaud this kid's effort and heart, not bring him down. I know many players that would not be doing what he is doing with this kind of injury. IF he ever gets completely healthy again, we will all see the hype was worth it.

This is one Tough kid trying to play through. I'm more concerned about him doing himself long term damage.
Go Griz

he must have read this thread before the game, good job tonight kid!
Selvig did ok, most of the game...but Stauacher was the catalyst with Cherry.....Johnson was a non factor most of the first half and made his points at the free throw line.....the Griz are balanced but they have no inside game....the refs gave them some breaks tonight....dull crowd....few students....Tinks is vocal, for sure.....a good game and a world better than the past 2 visits to LA area by the Griz......

It looks like the Glassman really stepped up in spite of the injury. I'm hoping he doesn't make it worse with the extra playing time.

You are OBVIOUSLY uninformed, at best. Selvig is not even close to 100% physically, yet he plays despite the pain. As for your "no inside game" comment, you have no clue...the Griz best big man wasn't even on the trip and is averaging almost a double double. BQ is also one of the best shot blockers/changers in the BSC. Selvig had 15 points in the 1st half, so how is it Stauds "was the catalyst"? Frankly, he has been a disappointment for the most part, last night being an exception. Johnson almost always gets to the line 8-10 times per game which is yet another example you know next to nothing about this team. Try reading the stats sometime slick. But, thanks for playing.

Hey, take a deep breathe and try to stop drooling. I was at that game last night with about 30 other UM fans...you are reaching. Selvig made some 3 pt shots and played OK....not great....Stauds, as you call him, gave the team a lift by his play. They were losing momentum until he stepped up....try looking at the game and not the stats, slick.....LAST NIGHT the Griz had no inside game at all...even the coach said that.....try watching a game and not reading the "stats"....be nice.

I saw him play in HS once in their semifinal game against Browning. As I said then he was about the 3rd best player on the court that night. There were two kids from Browning who were about 6 inches or so shorter than him he took it straight at him and scored at will. Now, I'm not saying Dereck was bad, because he wasn't but from what I see of his playing now he plays a lot like he did in that game. He isn't as physical as other big guys his size but probably doesn't have as much heft, either. The few times I have seen him play live this season he gets pushed around inside more than Mathias and Qvale do. This isn't to say I don't like how Selvig plays, I love his passing ability and the inside-outside game he brings. He's just a different player than your typical big.
