Secondary part of Griz D

Cranky

I don't post much on here, but I do read many of them. I know the Griz have struggled in many aspects of their D this year. I would like to hear some thoughts or comments specific to the secondary. In all my years of watching Griz, I've never seen so many big plays ( both Td's and big gains on critical downs) as a result of terrible pass coverage. Last week, against Portland, 2 griz defenders let one reciver get by the by 10 to 15 yds. So finally, are most those plays mental breakdowns or we just not very athletic in our secondary (i.e.- slow) I also see a real lack of physicality. I hope whatever our issues are, we can correct this week or the cats will tear us up.

I agree with Lord. There have been some blown coverages. The game is so fast and built to confuse DBs. Maybe the learned lessons of the mistakes cause improved coverage. We need to bring heat but account for their running game, too. I like our chances. We have not played our best game, as of yet!

I don’t know if you want my opinion, but I think the Griz secondary has struggled this year because they’re out of their depth in man coverage and because the defensive front hasn’t created the pressure that they typically do under Hauck.
It seems like the 3-3-5 is good for pressuring the QB because of the disguised blitzing but Tommy is so good at exploiting unmaned gaps. Do you think the griz should roll the dice twist blitzing alot?
Could playing more gap sound defense, eight in the box and man coverage be a better strategy against the cats?

You are exaggerating the secondary problems. Big mistakes were made in several games over a month ago. In last game, no one let receiver go by. The defender
fell early in route.

They definitely don’t want to play man.

If you get a bunch of DB’s with their backs to the LOS covering their assignment and Tommy gets loose… night night.

I think the Griz should stay in the 33 stack and do what they do on defense. They’re 16.5 road dogs. Play the high variance football, try to create some chaos, and see what happens. Plus, I don’t think you try to change who you are this far in.

Griz should play generally like they played last year, when they shut down Cat O.

So what was the difference in what they did with the 3-3-5 last year and the year before.
Two years ago in the press conference Tommy Mellot said the griz were not playing with gap integrity and they were easily exploited. What did they do last year? I think it was much less stunting more gap assignment. If they don't stop the run part of the RPO nothing else will matter.

Well we had a nose tackle that swallowed up and beat double teams and didn’t get washed down into our backers. He also moved the point of attack back so that your lineman didn’t have the ability to get up on the second level freeing everyone to stay in their run lanes. Plus you guys were pretty one dimensional last year and it got taken away.

Quite a few things are different this year including our talent and your development and evolution as an offense.

Regardless, Go Griz!

Did you know the Griz are playing mostly zone now? The pressure in the Griz D comes from backers and d-line

The Griz D scheme was very different last year, and had been designed for the Cats by T. Hauck and Cooper. T. Hauck was not with Griz 2 years ago. That was much of the difference last season. I didn't see Mellott talking about gap sound last year.

Except for Gubner and maybe Hill, I don't see the talent being so different this season. Riley Wilson is better than last year. The Griz have 5/6 good linebackers this year. Harris is better. Nuce seems to have recovered from his injury last season and is playing well. A number of the d-line seem to be playing well. The secondary is pretty much two-deep. I agree that the D this year is not as good as last season. They are improving, especially since the many mistakes in the secondary in the middle of the season and weaker tackling at the beginning of the season. I am waiting for the it to all come together. It's getting fairly late in the season, so maybe it's not going to completely come together. But I am hopeful. We'll see if the edge can keep from getting faked out, like they were 2 years ago. We'll see if the middle can withstand the middle run game. The secondary needs to not get lulled asleep. Mellott is elusive and can certainly hit wide open receivers downfield

Yes. They were playing a lot of man earlier in the season and getting burned, which created then general perception that they’re a bad defense.

Also… yes. Where else would it come from?

I took this and "defensive front" to be the d-line: "because the defensive front hasn’t created the pressure that they typically do under Hauck." This is what I just got from a Google: "A defensive front in football is the technique used by defensive linemen to align against offensive plays."

I haven't considered the linebackers as part of the defense front.

You’ll have to excuse me. Never played the game.

The D this year is horrible. Listen to Hobbs on the podcast. He says the D-line stands straight up at the snap of the ball. The linebackers stand around and rarely make contact at the line of scrimmage. The secondary has switched to playing almost entirely zone because they can't cover anyone.

Are you kidding? There's people on here who think Bobby should change the base defense to a 4-3 NOW! lol

Trajon Cotton, Corbin Walker, Janacaro and Nate Fouch were all very good players and veterans that played a lot of games. This years team was younger and made some mistakes. They are much better than they were a month ago.

Need to stay away from D-Line games up front.
