SEC Network

If you were wondering how Georgia could pay out $90,000 with only 1800 in attendance, look no further than the SEC Network. Wow.

I remember when the Pac12 decided they too needed a network. I didn't know why. Now I do. That SEC network is 24 hours, live games, wall-to-wall updates, interviews, and information on the most powerful conference in the country. If Montana were in the SEC, I'd spend hours watching that every day--not only to get updates on my school, but to see what my opponents are up to. Slick graphics, informative commentators--all very professional.

All leading to--the commercials! Tons of them. Not just from the late-night "1-800 outfits," but from the country's major corporate sponsors advertising in some of the country's largest media markets. The SEC network must be a goldmine.

Talk about the rich getting richer.

I hope we can schedule more SEC teams in the future. Because, as Willy Sutton once said when asked why he robbed banks, "That's where the money is."

Last calendar year, the Network paid out almost $700 million total to the 14 SEC schools, or nearly $50 million per school. That doesn’t include the payouts schools like Alabama and Auburn get when the Iron Bowl is on CBS.

To put that in perspective, Alabama football produced $95.1 million in revenue, more than $48 million which came from TV money.

The entire University of Montana athletic budget was around $22 million last year. Georgia is playing seven money games in hoops this winter, all at home, just to balance the budget.
