Scrimmage Tonight!

Chavez had 14 or so fouls, but looked good. Van Vliet is big and tall, but has zero leaps. Swift looks real good. Tiny Point guard from Chicago is good. Strait has bulked up nicely and should be a force. Dlouhy, Matthews, Martin and Criswell look their usual selves. #40 frosh from Hollister,CA looks just like Nate Covill facially.

I doubt anyone else will report here. There was only about 45 people there.

This scrimmage was done in quarters plus a 5 minute OT period.
Players swapped jerseys so whatever the score is was pretty much meaningless.

Anyway, thought the scrimmage turned out pretty well. Will likely start out with a small lineup relying on perimeter shooting. There just isn't a big man to rely on, but do have a 6 - 8, 250 pound stud to help with some inside scoring.

3 - Austin Swift - Scored 9 points. Will likely come off the bench. Looked good, especially in the 3rd quarter.

5 - Eric Van Vliet - Scored 4 points, all free throws. Not ready for prime time yet, but hopefully by conference time, he can make a solid contribution. Maybe he can progress like how Andrew Strait did last year in his freshman season. If he doesn't, Griz may have problems with interior defense and scoring.

10 - Bryan Ellis - scored 9 points. Has some good moves to the basket, but had problems finishing. Missed 3 bunnies. Good passer as he had some very nice assists. Not so good shot outside.

11 - Matt Dlouhy - scored 15 points. He can dunk the ball, made 2 three pointers. Did start out slow, making only 2 points in the first two quarters. He still is athletic and should possibly be the spark off the bench if needed or start depending on what type of lineup that Krysko wants.

12 - Kevin Criswell - scored 27 points. Streak shooter. Was totally off from field and free throw line in first quarter. Started to warm up in second quarter and was nearly unstoppable in second half.

20 - Greg Spurgetis - didn't score anything at all. Just based on today's scrimmage he will likely red shirt. Didn't do anything great, but didn't really hurt the team either.

22 - Matt Martin - scored 27 points. Not as streaky as Criswell, but he is a shooter. Scored 12 points in the 5 minute overtime period. Also, scored 9 points in second quarter. Didn't shoot as often in the second, third, or fourth quarters. Played well at point, but I see him more at the shooting guard.

23 - Stuard Mayes - scored 14 points. Should be a player coming off the bench that hopefully will provide a good spark. Can hit the 3 pointer, having made 2 of them.

30 - Mike Chavez - Scored 9 points. Fouled 10+. Will need to work real hard on defense before I would trust him out there. Way too many fouls. If he can cut down on the fouls, he should do well assuming he can become qualified to play next semester. Wait and See.

34 - Andrew Strait - Scored 21 points. This guy is a stud. If he doesn't start than I will be very dissappointed.

40 - Kyle Sharp - Scored 8 points. He will likely come off the bench to give some starter a rest. Maybe a redshirt, but with Seyfert and Hasquet, may not. Does have good passing skills.

44 - Virgil Matthews - Scored 12 points. He may be the starting point guard at beginning of season. Looks to be a very tough battle between him and Ellis for point guard. Will likely play some at two guard, also.

Overall:
My starting lineup would be this:

PG - Matthews (or Ellis)
SG - Martin
3G - Criswell
PF - Dlouhy
C - Strait

and watch the 3 pointers go in (hopefully) or clunk. If it is clunk, then I really hope Strait has a big night to offset the poor outside shooting, and that Van Vliet can develop quickly(yeah I like to ask a lot from a true freshman).

I think this team will be more uptempo, so should be able to get both inside and outside shooting opportunities.

Tomorrow, Lady Griz Scrimmage. For some reason, I see similarities with the Griz and Lady Griz, in that both may rely a lot on the perimeter shooting.

There were a lot more than 45 people there. I think the starting lineup may look something like 5-Strait, 4-Dlouhy, 3-Mayes, 2-Criswell, 1-Martin. Strait has really gotten stronger and played great. He is tough to stop underneath. Actually, I thought Dlouhy showed the best defense against Strait when he went up against him in the 2nd half. Given Matthews ability to play the 1, 2 or 3, he may be more valuable coming off of the bench. He played well tonight and is a really crafty player. I really like Mayes. I didn't expect him to have such a nice outside shot. Swift is a silky smooth player. It may be hard to keep him as a redshirt. He handles the ball really well and you can see why he played some point in high school. However the GRIZ are deep at the 2 and 3 spots. Van Vliet looks to have pretty good skills but did not do much. He does have a nice touch from the free throw line. He was given frequent rests and I think the staff may be taking it easy with him because of his senior year injury. Sharp may look a little like Colville, but a way of head of Nate in the skills department. Dlouhy has gotten a little bigger and seems up to being a 4. You won't find a more explosive or better 3 point shooting 4 in the Big Sky. He also is in great shape. The rumors about his weight in another thread were crap. Spurgetis is a walk-on. Hasquet was still in the cast/boot.

I have been watching Griz hoops since the mid 1960's. My opinion is that this is by far the best recruiting class we have had in that span. This is a fine group of athletes that should form the basis of a very strong program. Sharp and Swift will be fun to watch as they mature.

Van Vliet looks like he is still in rehab, but has the tools to be dominant in this league.

  Thanks to all for your reports. Last year in the scrimmage Hasquet appeared to be able to play with anyone on that team. Anybody have an opinion of where he is at this year and when the bad boot will go away.

Good to hear the scrimmage went well. I'm concerned about our depth inside and the fact that we might have to shoot a lot of threes. Starting to sound like the bobcats and that isn't good in this forum.

From the Official site.
Maroon defeats Silver 83-74 in first Griz scrimmage

'It will be good to have Jordan back in the mix,' Krystkowiak said. 'We need his size in the post, especially with the unfortunate loss of John.'

Sound like sooner rather than later. :thumb:
