So I got a big run down from a contact who checked out a Griz BBall scrimmage recently.
Strait and Hasquet looking solid. No questions or doubts here.
Rundles is the best guard option, just a question of whether he'll be the 1 or the 2. Plays with fire, but does expecting a team to follow him as a sophomore make him a little arrogant, or show leadership?
McGillis will be a great addition for next year. Too bad he couldn't play with Strait. (Has Phillips scholarship for this year)
Qvale is a big strong post presence. Similar build as Seyfert, jury is out on whether he can be more of an offensive threat than Big John was.
Sharp has bulked up a little more over the summer, and will be a nice backup to the 4 spot.
Martin is his usual old self. Playing with intensity and trying to make plays, but he appeared to be a somewhat of a social outcast from the rest of the team. Will probably be the other starting guard.
Watson is the only option for a typical 3. Questioned whether he is actually 6'5". Should be a staple in the Griz lineup for the next 2 years.
Elgin-Taylor is a nice solid guard. Has a tendency to want to play the 1 spot. Will likely be the first guard off the bench.
Selvig will need to redshirt. Great shooter and passer, probably close to 7'0" tall now, but needs the time to develop physically and become more aggressive.
Vanderjagt is out another 3 weeks with his broken leg. He really needed the summer to hit the weights hard. Hopefully he can show improvement, but its hard to expect much after sitting the summer out with an injury.
Graves is a good scoring option at guard, but the question is whether he can translate those skills into game situations against the physical defense at the D-I level.
Staudacher looked even bigger. Shooter. What else can you say?
Taylor wasn't scrimmaging at the time, but its probably best that he has to sit this year out with all the competition at guard.
No comments on Hurley. I'm taking that as he didn't stand out, but wasn't terrible.
Spurgetis is back in his usual role. Considered transferring to a D-II school over the summer, but its nice to see him back. Hard not to like this kid.
Overall, the team is still young. Big questions on maturity and discipline on the court. Defense is looking like it will be a weakness. No noticeable leadership at this point, although Rundles tries - he comes off a little brash.
Lots of talent and potential though. The team is definitely good enough to make a run at the BSC again this year, but they could be a heck of a lot better than that if they can put it all together.
