Schmaing out with appendix issue

Bill Speltz tweeted that Schmaing is out with appendicitis. There goes our improving stability on the O line for now. Hopefully they get this handled fast.

so, with both starting tackles looking iffy at this time, does anyone know which of the reserves are expected to get these slots,,,is there anyone clearly better than the other ? ....are they going to have to switch all the guys around to different positions in order to field the best o/l ? who is looking best in practice ?.....there may not even be answers to these questions, I was just wondering if anyone had a feel for what the coaches were thinking....go griz !

For some reason, I want to say "Oppy had the appy." Maybe its just because it is fun to say.

I seem to remember a seldom used Sr. OL (Hendrixson?) filled in for a few weeks and we never missed a beat...?

Found this old link stating Oppy was out for most of November 2011 with appendix:

http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57881&p=776986&hilit=appendix#p776986

Canada also appeared to have been out in November 2011 due to appendix:

http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53895&p=702834&hilit=appendix#p702834

Not sure how long he was out, though.

Unfortunately Badlands you're probably right. The OL was a question mark for 2014 even at full strength.

In the Missoulian article today on Herbert Gamboa (which is a pretty good read BTW) it lists that the starting tackles while Poole and Schmaing work their way back are Devon Dietrich at RT and Jackson Thiebes at LT.

It's a bit odd with these two because Thiebes was a JuCo TE transfer in the spring that moved to OT because of injuries in the spring - but actually did really well, despite being just 245 pounds at the time (think he's 260 now). Meanwhile Dietrich was a guard and was considered to be the heir-apparent to one of the guard positions after this season. Dietrich is 270ish pounds and I think was moved to tackle the 1st week of practice.

Meanwhile Clint LaRowe and Max Kelly who have been our two backup tackles last season and this spring... I guess remain just that. Not sure if there's injury or productivity issues. I kind of figured these two would be the first options - however coach Gragg sees it another way. Obviously the coach knows WAY more than the fan - but we'll have to see how it works.

This is complete bullshit. If Gragg won't even listen to a guy like Wahlberg about who to play how the hell are the rest of us pedestrian fans expected to get our voice heard?

Back when O'Day and Pflu were running the show all a properly credentialed booster had to do was let Pflu know what he wanted to see and bam! that play is ran. Why did they even bother to upgrade cell service if they are just going to ignore the text messages we send to Delaney telling him what play to run and who to put in?

Engstrom and Haslman better get their head and ass wired together and solve this cluster immediately before people just stop going to the games.

thanks b/w for your opinion on this...I view this with some concernment when a former converted tight end leap frogs our number 2's who have played the interior line their whole careers....most coaches say that we are only as good as the o/l...with that said, they are all on scholarship and better be quick studies with an attitude....go griz.....

I am confused by the highlighted statement above. Don't you mean tackle instead of interior?

I am surprised as well that Thiebes, a JC TE transfer from Lewis & Clark College, moved to tackle last spring has apparently passed up Max Kelly and Clint LaRowe on the depth chart. A couple of years ago the coaches were very high on both of these men, but I haven't heard anything recently. I believe Dietrich was a walk-on a few years ago and he impressed the coaches immediately so that he was on scholarship very shortly thereafter. However, he has played at guard for a couple of years now and once again I am surprised he was switched to tackle and moved ahead of both Max and Clint. The highly touted true freshman from Oregon, David Reese, must not be quite ready to play yet along with the JC transfer, Jared Clark, who looks a bit light but played very athletically on tape. There is some depth on the interior line, particularly if you include the true frosh Robert Luke. My guess is he will dress out all year, but only play in an emergency situation in an effort to keep his redshirt. Since we're converting a backup guard and a former TE to play tackle and they currently are number one on the depth chart, I'm a bit concerned about our overall tackle depth...

This is eerily similar to the problems the Cats had along the O Line a couple years ago. We got so thin we had to convert our beast of a Tight End, Stephen Foster to Tackle. So he added some weight, but still never topped 270 ish I don't think. We were all thinking we were screwed... but he ended up being a damn good tackle. I assume your guys at tackle will be solid, but if they go down you might be hosed. What I'm wondering is what you're going to do at Center? Is that true Freshman still in the running to start there? Is he really that good or is it out of desperation? For a kid to be good and big enough to be a starting center in D1 football right out of high school... you would have thought he would have had big time offers all over the place.

"You never know how tough you are until being tough is your only choice." Paraphrasing Mr.Marley but it works in this case.

Need O-line healthy one position we dont have much veteran experience in. Any word if Colin McGillivray is here? Or David Reese how is he developing? Can Robert Luke play any other position besides Center? Or Jared Clark?

Not sure who said the true frosh would be starting, but it was posted on bobcatnation.com so it must be true. :)

Probable depth at center:
1 Logan Hines
2 Ben Weyer
3 Robert Luke (true frosh)

At this point I would have no concern whatsoever with Luke playing. He is a beast and he is ready.

I think it was catatac who posted the info that a true frosh would be starting at center for the Griz. Pretty sure he also reported that Whitted, our projected starting strong safety, was having shoulder surgery. Last I knew Whitted was out 7-10 days. I hate it when the facts get in the way of a good story!
