Saw Andrew Strait yesterday

West Valley (Yakima) went up against Clarkston and Josh Heytvelt yesterday in Cheney for the Regional 3A championship. Strait had 19 points and 10 boards, including 3 threes. Heytvelt is 6'10" and Strait supposedly 6'8", but he looked more like 6'6' to me. Heytvelt dominated the game when he had to (including the winning bucket) as Clarkston won 41-40. Strait can really jump, has a great first step, and rebounds pretty well. Has a funny looking jumper (each hand on the top and bottom of the ball) but he is pretty effective. Never saw him go to his left. Looked to be a pretty good free throw shooter. Most impressive to me was his attitude towards his teammates. Looked like he could take over a game himself, but he involves his teammates, makes good decisions, a very fundamentally sound high school player. Very mature physically for his age. If he keeps growing and hits the weight room hard in Missoula, with his shooting touch we'll be glad he came.

Just my two cents.

StraitA is 6'8" JH is 6'10" if that helps. Strait was about 80% with a sprained ankle and head cold. Keep in mind that Strait had other players on his team that could score. JH did not. Personally I'll take big Andrew-but then I am biased. With good coaching and development he will do well-quite capable of playing a 3 or 4. His mobilty was down a little due to ankle.

Why are you biased? If Heytvelt has no one else to help him, and Strait does, then why would you go with Strait? I thought Heytvelt put up some horrible looking shots, but I would tend to think that he will play immediately as a freshman at GU. Will Strait play as a true freshman for the Griz?

StraitA has the potential to play next yr for the Griz-he needs to work hard to get ready for next season;how much he plays of course depends on his development. The same can be said for JH at GU-with Morrison,Turiaf,Mallon, etc in front of him it certainly won't be automatic.
Strait could be a 3or 4;JH a 4or5. The ability to be physical will be important for both.It should be fun to watch.

Josh Heytfelt is a major recruiting coup for the Zags. Posts on www.zagshoops.com say his game has improved to where he one of the top 30 high school players in the nation. He selected GU over Oregon, Kansas and Arizona. David Pendergraft (Pendo) and Pierre-Marie Altidor Cespedes (PMAC) are other top notch players that the Zags can now go after. Playing in the new Kennel would be a blast.

Strait outplayed Pendo in the Sundome a couple of months ago. Josh H has great athleticism but is not there mentally yet-e.g. 2games in the Wash 3A tournament showed his weaknesses. While I have great respect for player development at GU going in I think that both of these guys are overrated;don't believe what you read on Zags hoops. No way is JH that high up the food chain nationally.
