San Fransico Game Thread

Griz went on a bit of a run and had a chance to cut it to single digits. Turned it over though :(

40-27 with just under 16 mins to go. Looking better so far this half but too many fouls. Dunn just picked up his 4th with a charge.

Our outside shooting continues to suck. 3-21 from 3 now, so 1-6 this half. Up to 28.9% from the field though 11-38... so 5-12 this half. Doing better on the boards out-rebounding USF 9-3 this half so far.

Down 49-29 though with under 12 to go.

55-32, Gregory up and in, fouled. He hasn't been trying that pattern much, he did reall well with it last year.

Just now tuned into the game. Sounds like the GRIZ are playing terrible on offense.

Defense isn't doing so well either. SF is shooting 66.7% from the field... 24-36 right now.

gloomy rainy night in the bay area, with a report to match. seems every weakness we've seen with this team was on display tonight:
--slow start, a la colorado state. we just don't have the talent to be anything but rattlesnakes on amphetamines, every minute. today we were touring mexico, and it was siesta time.
--free throw shooting. we shot seven for 14, but that's deceptive. at one moment in the first half, i counted one point out of a possible eight from the foul line. three times we missed the front end of a one-and-one. even jordan gregory, cuprit twice. you gotta make free throws!
--poor rebounding. again. no rebound, no ball, no ball, no score. two plus two.
--poor interior defense. breunig is our only solid interior defender, and his athleticism leaves him vulnerable when he leaves his feet or tries to block shots that he thinks he can get to but can't. oh! brian qvale! where are you mrs. robinson!
--poor three point shooting. without much of an interior game, this team will live and die on threes. today we died.
--turnovers? not bad today--ten to their 17. i can live with ten, barely. but one was killer--just shot ole mo right through the heart as we attempted a second half comeback.
--dang! dang! dang! i can't tell you how many times a ball that might have gone in just rolled off the rim. as somebodyt said earlier, the missed kemp dunk at the end was a metaphor for our entire game.
--free throw attempts. c'mon! 27 personal fouls to their 18? 35 attempts to our 14? this is the one thing that ruins college basketball for me, the shameless homer refereeing. usf got into the double bonus early in the second half, essentially ending any hope of a comeback. decuire didn't get t'd up, but he did have at several lengthy discussions with the officials. we know who wins those.

general observations: two guys stood out for us--breunig and edmonds. both are athletic, and edmonds surprised me with his shooting ability. he's one guy on our team that can get his own shot when we need it...edmonds needs to change his name to edwards, becaause that's what the p.a. guy called him most of the game. it's like people calling it ore-GONE, which so pisses off oregonians. i wouldn't blame edwards--i mean, edmonds...breunig's game is a duller version of another fairly good german player, dirk nowitski. he'd be much better as a three or four, if we had a true post player...don't want to betray any people, but can report that during the period we were still looking for a head coach, a player who might have signed with decuire went to oregon instead...faces seen in the crowd: a healthy contingent of mario dunn friends and family. also mike montgomery, looking montana-casual in jeans. and finally, former griz great delvon anderson, an ex-teammate of decuire's...and a final final: while i'm happy for this series that we have going with u.s.f., it must be remembered that gonzaga has lifted all boats in their conference. thus usf was an inch taller, a pound heavier and a step quicker than most of our players. average against gonzaga and byu translates into very very good against big sky caliber basketball. anothe reason i'm hoping we move on up to the mountain west, where we belong.

What this team needs right now is its senior leader, eh-hem Jordan Gregory, to step it the eff-up and play like a senior. I have faith he will get it going offensively, but I didn't expect this.

Kinda remindes me of A.Strait when Tinkle took over. Just wasn't the same player after krysko left. Different systems, I guess.

ya know, maynard, you may have hit on something here. it could be i watched this team for two hours and missed the main story, because you are absolutely right.

twice before when i saw the griz in person, i was super-impressed with gregroy. talk about playing with intensity, he was an absolute warrior--with talent. the heart of the team. even when will cherry was there, gregory was "my guy." yet in my report i barely mentioned him, except to say he missed two front ends of one-and-ones, at a time they were critical to keeping us in the game. and now that i think of it, he's clearly not playing with the intensity i saw before.

usually when a player is disgruntled, the story is in the minutes. sure enough, gregory the senior had fewer minutes yesterday than dunn or edmonds, both sophomores, and just a few more than gfeller, also a sophomore. he wound up with 21 minutes, which is little more than half the game. clearly decuire is trying to develop a deep bench. but just as clearly, while dunn and edmonds fully earn their minutes, both are decuire guys. decuire has known them both since high school when he was recruiting jabari bird to cal.

i'm going to pay close attention to this wednesday night. at one extreme, maybe i'm just seeing things that don't exist. at the other extreme, maybe it's time decuire and gregory have a heart-to-heart. with three days down here between games, let's hope they find the time to do that. because as you say, i certainly expected more out of gregory than i've seen so far this year. and from what i've seen, he's the only player on this club that can provide the "spark" that we so critically need.

I'm not sure about any of that, but last year, Gregory had ice in his veins and was fearless on the floor with an enthusiasm that excited the players and crowd. This year, he seems to lack that fire and instead casually passes the ball, more often than not. I think, he will step up sooner rather than later because he has a natural talent. As for Dunn, a good player but way too out of control and is hampered by unnecessary fouls. Maybe, the kids that left affected Gregory because he worked very well with one of them.

I noticed him his freshman year, when the Griz on the floor would do something, the biggest cheers came from that kid on the bench. He was all over the place to support the team. When he finally got playing time, he played with a terrific intensity. For each of the past two seasons, you could see he had taken the off season to improve some new skill set, each time giving the team some additional strength.

This season, something is definitely different. What he formerly did well, he does less well. Saw him in the store three weeks ago, and there was definitely a "flat affect," a term often used to describe someone not engaging with what's around him, but also symptomatic of some life change causing a retreat. "There," but not really "there." A bit of a "funk." That seems to be the way he's playing.

Hopefully, and not just for basketball's sake, whatever it is, is a passing thing.

now that we've singled out gregory, let's not forget: he's not what's fundamentally wrong with this team. he's not responsible for our lack of rebounding, or poor interior defense. he didn't recruit a team where seven of eleven active players are underclassmen, and our second best post player is a true freshman. others missed threes and free throws too. and the "flat effect" used here to describe gregory applied last sunday not only to him but the entire team and all the fans who showed up as well. let's hope the sunday wake turns into a wednesday night wake-up call, or it could get ugly, fast.
