Saints taking on big (Sky) boys

MrTitleist said:
There's a big difference between Tennessee and Montana and Carroll and Montana.. the talent gap is MUCH wider between NAIA/FCS and FBS/FCS.

85 -63 schollys

63 -24 schollys......

The Griz got beat by a poor at best SEC team by 26 points

IMO Carroll will lose by 35-42 so it is in the ballpark. FCS teams have closer talent to FBS schools but lack the the depth of talent. Carroll will have, maybe, 5 - 10 guys that could play on PSU's team. 35 pt loss with no injuries is a win in my book.

I agree. I was at the Tennessee game and thought the Griz O and D line looked bigger and I thought they looked better. It was a pleasant suprise to hear Dooley agree with me in his press conference talking about how UT got "whipped" up front and if it wasn't for the speed advantage on the outside, the game could have been a lot closer.

You think there is any chance of this happening in PSU? Some of you probably do.

Let me preface this post by saying I have seen MAYBE 3 Carroll College games in my entire life, and I know absolutely NOTHING about their players or their skill levels...

Carroll College Saints:

On offense:

Their center is 6'1", 265 (significantly larger than the sCats center, if I recall)
They have 9 offensive linemen that go 280 lbs or better, and 3 that top 290.
Their senior-most QB is 6'1", 195 lbs
Their starting RB is 6'0", 227 lbs, and they have EIGHT RB's on the roster that top 200 lbs
Their 4 WR's are a tad short, going 6'3", 6'2", 6'2" and 6'1" and all are between 180-205 lbs
Their starting TE is 6'5", 255 lbs.

On defense:

They have 6 DB's that are over 6' and over 200 lbs (their roster doesn't differentiate between CB and S)
Both their starting DE's are bigger than Featerston was last year
Their top 3 D-linemen are all over 6'2" and go 260, 260, 275 (admittedly, a little light here)
Their LB's are all in the 6'2-6'3" range and average over 225 lbs

Portland State:

On Offense;

Their O-Line goes 6'5", 350 lbs, 6'6", 315 lbs, 6'4", 300 lbs, 6'4", 295 and 6'2" 290 lbs
Their only non-senior QB listed is 6'4", 195 lbs
Their RB's are ALL significantly smaller scat-back types in the 5'8" 175 lbs range
Their WR's are all about the same size as Carrolls, just 5-10 lbs heavier (and probably faster)
Their TE is 6'4" 245

On defense:

Their safeties are in the 6'1", 210 lbs range
Their CB's are short, 5'8 and 5'9" 175 lb range
Their starting DE's are 6'4" 240 and 6'3" 245 (not much bigger than Carroll's)
Their top 3 DL go 290, 290, 265
Their LB's all run 6'1" to 6'2" 230-235 lbs

The real size mismatch is in the trenches. PSU's O-Line is huge compared to Carroll's D-linemen, and conversely Carroll's O-linemen and PSU's D-linemen are roughly the same size. That, a likely speed difference and DEPTH are probably going to make it a long day in Portland for the Saints...

Sampson was 6-0 277
so significant isn't really the word I would use

I thought i remembered during the Griz/scat game the announcers saying the scat center weighed 245. Like I said though, I was attempting to recall a verbal comment...

Two things I think I think:

1. PSU should win big, but they are definitely capable of playing down to the level of their opponents, and can lose to anyone on their schedule. They've never been known to have a lot of heart.

2. Carroll d-lineman had better watch their knees. PSU is by far the dirtiest team in he BSC, and I doubt if Carroll plays a Frontier team that is coached to illegally chop block like PSU is.

Wow, I forgot what an insecure guy our moderator was. All Montanans should be exulted that Carroll is taking a shot at PSU. How soon we forget. What other team"s fans have actually shown up and backed the Griz nation on fields far from home for recent championship games? Shame on all Griz fans who feel threatened by the success of an NAIA team. I hate the Vikes and I hope CC pulls an upset. Stranger things have happened. I'd say the Saints could have a slim chance of beating Portland State with a QB who was as talented as Emmert was. Well, this year they should have Dakota Stonehouse at the helm, he has reminded many of JD Emmert with his quick release and accuracy. Don't forget the Saints also have a RB who won NAIA Player of the Year honors. Chance Demarais was recruited by both the Griz and the Cats. I say go Carroll. Remember that they will also have a game under their belt, as they play MSU-Northern the week before up in Havre. A lot of wrinkles can get ironed out after the first game of the year. I believe it will be PSU's first game of the year and they will be over confident.
No, I am not threatened by this team's success. I am proud of our little brothers playing up.
Would Carroll ever beat our Griz? No, we'd win 98 out of a 100, but they would probably beat Big Sky member Northern Colorado 55/45. If the Saints can pound the ball and maintain drives, they should do OK. Those that say anything over 39-13 is likely are just plain uneducated in football matters. Southern Oregon did get whupped by PSU and their talent level is similar to CC, so I won't hold your predictions against you. On any given Saturday night stranger things have happened.
Go Griz-Go Saints

These are the same who got their tightie whities in a bunch when others predicted Tennessee beating the Griz too!

Agreed. As good as Carroll is, they would have little chance of beating the Griz, especially in WA-Griz Stadium.

Bottom line, support the other Montana team playing PSU this fall. Win, lose or draw, CC will play hard.

All I have to add is that PSU can go 0-11 next year for all I care. Who cares if it would "reflect negatively" on the Big Sky. That thinking's for shitty coattails riding teams in the CAA.

I couldn't agree more, while PSU has to be favored over Carroll, if they are not at the top of their game they could very easily lose to a very good Carroll team!!

Oh PLEASE!!!!!! This game won't even be close. PSU will be on cruise control in the 2nd half with 2nd and 3rd teamers on the field with a 30+ point lead.

I agree with Hammer. Carroll will lose-by a lot! If Carroll was playing the Griz, there would be nothing but Pro-Griz comments showing up. But here we have the hated Vikings, and boy all of us Montanans think Carroll could pull this off. Portland St. played us tough last year in Missoula. They led 21-10 at half and we beat this team by 6. Carroll's going on the road to play a well-coached, cheap-shot, faster, bigger team, and they're gonna get their butts kicked. I'd love to see them do well, but they won't hold up. In fact, it may be one of those games that affects them for the rest of the year. These are the games where injuries happen. As the Griz have done in past years: you go up against bigger, quicker athletes, and more depth, you get beat up. iIm talking Iowa, Oregon, Tennessee. It's scholarships and overall better athletes. Sure, anything can happen on any given night-but it won't-not this time.

Please don't mistake my complete and utter apathy for Frontier Conference athletics as feeling threatened. I just don't care, and I never will. But I don't have any problem whatsoever with other people being interested in it.

This is the Tech fan in you talking! lol

I believe Carroll will win this game. So much in fact, I am willing to bet Growler's money on it. Since he has more than the rest of us, I'm sure he wont mind. :)

Pathetic....

Pathetic is the fact that you don't care about the Griz but want us to care deeply about NAIA football. Do you see the non sequitur?
