Saints taking on big (Sky) boys

I don't think there is anything wrong with Carroll playing PSU. Tech and Western have played FCS teams. But I have watched quite a few Frontier games and watch the Griz almost every week. Big difference in talent all the way around. Probably the biggest noticeable difference is WR and DB. The speed and athleticism of PSU at those positions will be overwhelming. The QBs are also much better in FCS.

Finally, we can resolve this ridiculous debate.

PSU should destroy them.
If Carroll wins, then they need to hash it out against the Griz.

I still think Griz win 99 out of 100. The one loss being due to two factors. First, Ryan Kessman decides to sign with Carroll, making them the equivalent of Oregon. Second, the improperly installed lights in WA Griz come falling down, injuring all the quarterbacks. I sub in from the stands after beating out O'day in a thumb war. I put up 400 yards but Kessman picks me off on the final drive for the win. Sorry guys, I tried. Congrats Saints fans.

I agree. I was at the Tennessee game and thought the Griz O and D line looked bigger and I thought they looked better. It was a pleasant suprise to hear Dooley agree with me in his press conference talking about how UT got "whipped" up front and if it wasn't for the speed advantage on the outside, the game could have been a lot closer.

You think there is any chance of this happening in PSU? Some of you probably do.

Let me preface this post by saying I have seen MAYBE 3 Carroll College games in my entire life, and I know absolutely NOTHING about their players or their skill levels...

Carroll College Saints:

On offense:

Their center is 6'1", 265 (significantly larger than the sCats center, if I recall)
They have 9 offensive linemen that go 280 lbs or better, and 3 that top 290.
Their senior-most QB is 6'1", 195 lbs
Their starting RB is 6'0", 227 lbs, and they have EIGHT RB's on the roster that top 200 lbs
Their 4 WR's are a tad short, going 6'3", 6'2", 6'2" and 6'1" and all are between 180-205 lbs
Their starting TE is 6'5", 255 lbs.

On defense:

They have 6 DB's that are over 6' and over 200 lbs (their roster doesn't differentiate between CB and S)
Both their starting DE's are bigger than Featerston was last year
Their top 3 D-linemen are all over 6'2" and go 260, 260, 275 (admittedly, a little light here)
Their LB's are all in the 6'2-6'3" range and average over 225 lbs

Portland State:

On Offense;

Their O-Line goes 6'5", 350 lbs, 6'6", 315 lbs, 6'4", 300 lbs, 6'4", 295 and 6'2" 290 lbs
Their only non-senior QB listed is 6'4", 195 lbs
Their RB's are ALL significantly smaller scat-back types in the 5'8" 175 lbs range
Their WR's are all about the same size as Carrolls, just 5-10 lbs heavier (and probably faster)
Their TE is 6'4" 245

On defense:

Their safeties are in the 6'1", 210 lbs range
Their CB's are short, 5'8 and 5'9" 175 lb range
Their starting DE's are 6'4" 240 and 6'3" 245 (not much bigger than Carroll's)
Their top 3 DL go 290, 290, 265
Their LB's all run 6'1" to 6'2" 230-235 lbs

The real size mismatch is in the trenches. PSU's O-Line is huge compared to Carroll's D-linemen, and conversely Carroll's O-linemen and PSU's D-linemen are roughly the same size. That, a likely speed difference and DEPTH are probably going to make it a long day in Portland for the Saints...

I would only comment that this is on paper and can be misleading.

My co-worker’s son played d-line for Carroll, and was listed at 6’1, 245. He used to come in the office all the time and I would chuckle. I am 5’10” and at the time was 225 and was bigger that he is, noticeably.

My assistant’s son started at center for 3 years and was listed at 6’3”, 270 and was a legit 6’1”, maybe 240.

raider and griz4life obviously have issues with Carroll - i doubt either have ever watched Carroll play but somehow feel threatened that some other team other than the almighty Griz are getting some press. to compare carroll football to the badlands bowl athletes shows either your stupidity or prejudice against carroll. again, i doubt the saints win this game, but will compete and make the state of montana proud as they did in winning 6 national titles in 12 years.

  Never watched Carroll play? Hardly, I know several players who played for Carroll in the last 7 years and have watched them play many times, including the National Championship Game in 2008. That was the biggest realization to me was watching the Griz get stomped by Richmond in a game that featured 7 future NFL players to the next day watching Carroll and Sioux Falls battle it out. It really felt like watching a high school game and it was the two best NAIA teams in the Nation.

wagriz4life: would that be the same Sioux Falls team that beat the University of North Dakota 27-13 ? -so you're saying the newest member of the Big Sky is high school calibur too? my guess is that you were jealous of your friends and had to belittle their effort, thats the only explanation for deameaning the Saints. no question, FCS is a better quality ball - if you read my posts you will see i repeatedly point that out. but to compare CC to high school shows your complete ignorance of the talent levels.

I go to Tech... & I gotta say... god forbid they ever become a 0.500 team. It's just getting to be sad! :(
Aren't they already?

2011 season they won 3/11.

Are you completely oblivious to the fact those 3 wins were with a new coach and staff who installed completely new offensive and defensive schemes? And started a soph at QB. You can bag on Coach Morrell and the Diggs all you want but he will have the Digs contending in a couple years.

Well, I'm from Butte... & I go to school at Tech... & I haven't missed a game recently... so no, I'm not oblivious.

I hope they are contending in a couple years. I am tired of seeing my fellow students get taken to the woodshed week after week after week... The fact of the matter is that they need to start winning if they're going to attract any talent.

EDIT: Not to mention, if Tech could keep the players out of the bars most nights of the week, they would probably do better. Any night of the week, you can find over half the team NOT studying, NOT practicing, & just getting drunk. God forbid that any of them work hard during the offseason. Between work, classes, & working out in the HPER, I have yet to see more than a handful (total throughout the week) of the players conditioning or practicing their skills. Coach needs to cut half the team & get some players dedicated to the team, & who are there to be STUDENT ATHLETES. Not jocks who are at school to drink.

I would LOVE to see Carroll pull off a squeaker! :thumb:

Has Portland winning by +13. It doesn't look like it would be quite as big of a blowout as some think.

Haven't missed a game in four years... so no, I'm not oblivious.

WHAT????? I'm outraged! This has been going on for dozens of years, and the old school guys could handle it all. Need more balance. What is happening to the elite in Butte? Number rule in Butte....the party comes first....and yes we used to beat Carroll all the time in my day. Maybe more partying is needed.

Maybe they need an old timer to show them how it's done! :thumb:

I remember numerous nights where the jocks partied all night, and kicked ass all day. This included football, basketball AND the CopperKings when they were in town.

The real issue is the Tech has a limited offering of majors, and very few "jocks" are looking to be Petroleum or Mining Engineers. Its always is a tough sell for recruiting.

That is a big issue. I'm very happy to see that Tech is expanding its scope of courses. That will definitely help the school grow. :thumb:

I think the in the bigger picture, the talent in other NAIA schools is stepping up, & Tech doesn't seem to be keeping up.

Sadly I hear M-Days doesnt even exist much anymore.....A three day party like none other, imagine Aber Day stretched across 3 days...and then multiple it by 3 times.
