Sure, last year they barely defeated a #11 New Hampshire (8-3 at the time) 26 - 25. That's when MSU was rated #7. They got slaughtered by Sam Houston State 13 - 49; that's 36 points!!! So if they're #11 at the beginning, I can see that. But rated over Youngstown State that defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 31 - 17; rated over Northern Iowa that barely lost to Wisconsin 21 - 26 and lost to Iowa 16 - 27?..rated over Eastern Washington that defeated Idaho 20 - 3 and barely lost to Washington State 20 - 24 of the PAC-12? Give me a break.
They talk up defeating S.F.Austin in their Bozeman Chronicle as a thrilling see-saw battle; come on, S.F.Austin was greatly over-rated this year in the polls before that game. They were 6 -5 last year and why were they rated #23?..by default? By defeating a Division II team in SW Oklahoma State 49-14?..SW Oklahoma State has a homecoming Game against someone like Southeast Nazarene, no less. By Losing to SMU 0 - 52?
Yeah, there's 165 voters that cast votes, with 14 teams out west receiving some kind of recognition; that's it. All those voting farther east must be wanting to meet MSU in the FCS Playoffs, knowing that it's a cupcake game, if one doesn't shank FG attempts, that is, and decide to beef up MSU in the Polls in order to do so.
Now I can see casting votes for teams that have earned it; has MSU? I can definitely see Youngstown State, Sam Houston State, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa and Eastern Washington rated over MSU. Not the other way 'round. They should earn it first. What have they done to do so?..defeated an over-rated @ #23 S.F.Austin that was a scramble for MSU to come out on top, on their own field, but barely, mind you, in order to be 3 - 0. Mind you, one win against Chadron State, one win against Drake and then the latest. I don't see it. I don't see MSU @ #2; yet alone in the Top Ten. Maybe, but maybe, in the Top Fifteen, but barely. And certainly not over the aforesaid teams. If they're really #2 they should of defeated S.F. Austin by forty points, on the road no less. Then, but only maybe then, but still not over the other teams mentioned.
Just wait, though, when Northern Iowa plays Youngstown State this weekend, the loser goes further down in the Polls while MSU,
if they defeat Northern Colorado, will garner more votes for a facade of second place.
Go figure.
