Sacks quote on Mcgourin

I remember in last years recruiting class someone asked Bobby who he thought could contribute right away and he replied Mcgourin.

So, absolutely no one can predict those catastrophic head, neck, or knee etc. injuries. But a 18-year old human body is nothing like a 22-year old body, so red-shirting really makes sense.
There is a "major" reason that the NFL doesn't allow kids to skip college, and go to NFL. A 18-19 year old is just growing into his adult body.

Ideally, absolutely.

Here’s a novel idea. How about we start the best 11? And rotate in the next best 11? If McGourin is ALREADY all that and a bag of chips (and I believe that he is), then shouldn’t he be in the regular rotation and not saved for some other (future) day? I mean, it’s not like the guys he’s competing for playing time with are Seniors....

I mean, there are various ways to do it, and you may be right. But take a guy like that as a redshirt junior is going to be a heck of a player, maybe an All-American. If so, he's ideally an All-American as a redshirt senior as well. So in the grand scheme of things, you're trading an All-American guy 4 years from now for an 18 year old kid that rotates at best.

Well, like I said in the post above yours, if the guys out there were getting to the QB with regularity, I might say fine. But if his move is as good as Sacks says it is then why not? Nothing is guaranteed 4 years from now. Ask those O-linemen who were projected beasts (Jackson, Scott, etc) who are now out of football because of injuries/concussions.

If he’s that good what the hell are we saving him for?

Athletes are a lot better when they’re 22 than 18.
If they get over all the hurdles along the way, injuries, academics, trouble, etc. Not a lock.

Kids been exceptional for a freshman. Here’s hoping he stays healthy and productive throughout.

If he stays healthy, he will break records. He is the real deal, speed, strength, size, technique...he is the reason that past starters aren't seeing the field more! Where is he from again?

Here is my read from a few conversations. He is viewed sort of like a one-trick pony (a little bit of an extreme description). They see his pass rush ability as exceptional and want to see that on the field in some games. But the hope is by redshirting, he can round out his game and be All-American level down the road.

You can look at that from both sides. The weight room has proven and is meant to decrease the risk of injury. Is it not? Academic issues could present themselves tomorrow. Trouble could present itself tomorrow. Not sure why the what if game takes precedence here.

Possible....even likely...he certainly helps in the pass rush area (an area of desperate need, for sure).

He should play regularly all season and not redshirt. His redshirt year should be saved in case he gets hurt.

I like this strategy a lot. I feel like he is proving to be to good to keep off the field. Might as well turn him loose.

I think since he has already missed 5 games, it makes sense to redshirt him at this juncture.

The Coaching staff will make Red Shirt Decisions based on what is in the best interest of the Team, and the Kid. Hopefully they don't dick it up. Go Griz

Great point and I agree considering he's missed 5 games. Crazy we are already so deep into our season, I didn't realize that. It's flyin by. :thumb:
