nope-he decided not to attend the U of M.

Any news on what happened to him. Has he caught on with someone for basketball or did he decide to pursue football?

Prep Notebook: Ex-Lake Washington star Staudacher mulls options
By Matt Massey

Special to The Seattle Times

Ryan Staudacher excelled in two prep sports.

Ryan Staudacher long ago committed to play college basketball at the University of Montana.

After spending last summer in Missoula, the 2005 graduate of Lake Washington High School never got comfortable. Staudacher came home to Kirkland before school started at Montana in the fall.

The 6-foot-3 Staudacher has been taking classes at Bellevue Community College, mulling his basketball future and even considering football again.

"It came down to a combination of things," said Staudacher, who averaged 19 points as a senior on the Kangaroos' basketball team and finished No. 2 in KingCo career passing in football with 6,655 yards. "I realized that it wasn't the best fit for me. It was nothing against the [Montana] program or the coaches. The coaches are some of the best in the nation. I just didn't think it was the right place for me to go."

Staudacher, a grayshirt practicing with the BCC men's basketball team, says he would even consider walking on to the University of Washington basketball team.

"I'm pretty open right now," he said.

Staudacher said he already has plenty of Huskies colors in his wardrobe after playing for Lake Washington.

"I have a lot of purple in my closet," he said with a laugh. "I would love to play at U-Dub."

sounds to me like someone told him he is better than he really is with that Pac 10 talk, oh well, plenty of guys want to be Griz

Maybe his problem was coming straight to Missoula in the summer. Nobody feels comfortable right away when they go to college for the first time. And there's nobody on campus during the summer too.

oh come on Stocks is open! just kidding, you may be right, but I think someone got in his head, it happens more than you would think

It's possible that he would rather ride the pines in the Pac 10 than contribute in the Big Sky. Maybe during that summer he had a rush of over-ambition.

But personally, if I came to UM during the summer after HS I would 1. Be extremely homesick because I'd be missing all my HS friends who are living out their last summer at home together and because I'd probably be all alone.
2. Spending the summer in the dorms would be a misery. Especially not being 21.

If he came to UM in the fall he'd get a completely different vibe and first impression of college life.

If he spent his first significant time in Missoula in the summer, his discomfort might be understandable. During orientation, he would have been aroud campus with a bunch of other scared freshmen, who were staying with their parents at the Doubletree or the Campus Inn. During his recruiting visit, and his subsequent visit to watch the team play later that season, Missoula was packed with students, and at least a little lively. But in the summer when the students are gone, it's pretty dead. Now don't get me wrong. When I was at UM, I loved floating the Clark Fork in the summer and hitting the links in the warm weather. The quiet life didn't suit me, but it was attractive in it's own way. Now a kid from Kirkland... well let's be honest. He's a bus ride away from a major city. It couldn't have been easy to adapt when in his first week, he probably would have seen about as many people in town as one would find at a MENSA convention in Bozeman. For the record, people, that would be NONE!!! Ok, maybe two, but they moved there from Germany or something, and no one warned them what it would be like.
