Run to set up pass or pass to set up run

Ever since the Don Read years I've been a proponent of pass to set up the run. Bobby has always been a run first guy and that is the one thing I have not enjoyed about his coaching style. I was hopeful that the Pease influence would change that. Against both Idaho and Furman after a turn over or big play its been 3 running plays and punt. I hope that won't be the case against the fats.

Should be no surprise. It has been the norm for Bobby ever since he has been coach. How many games during his long tenure has he ever put the pedal-to-the-metal after taking a second-half lead? He always plays very conservative, hoping the clock will run out before his opponent is able to beat him. He did it again on Saturday, and it nearly cost us a win. Everyone at Dukes watching his last series couldn't believe that he didn't try for a first down, which would have ended the game in regulation. Instead, we ended-up having to pray that we could win in OT. Don't think Read, Glenn, Dennehy, or Pflu would have played it the same way. But that's Bobby ball.

I think BH is just a RPO type coach. Most of his plays have been run. He tries to be balanced. There is little chance of his MO changing. The Griz have had good success under his guidance.

We have to accept his successes and warts IMO.

The Griz have enough talent to do either run to set up the pass or pass to set up the run. It is stubbornness that prevents switching when the current approach is not working. It was perfectly clear that Furman was going to stop the run no matter the cost. The Griz did not adjust to make them pay. Could be costly against NDSU.

Please, get back to quick routes.
Those seemed to almost disappear against Furman.
If out OL is still beat up, we need these short quick routes.

Run the offense that we ran against the cats. There were so many creative quick routes and high percentage short throws for McDowell…..it was beautiful, and we haven’t done it since. Let’s do that again

The problems with running the ball last game had to do with the skill of the Furman defense, sign stealing from what I am reading and a revamped o l i n e. That and pretending not to notice that the revamped o l i n e was struggling. Even the plus one run game was up the middle for the most part, though his long runs wound up going outside. Furman had free-running defenders all over the ball carriers, which indicates they weren't being blocked. The o l i n e had been playing very well until Brown and Walker went down. Worst thing that could happen to an offense that had some momentum. USD had what - sixty total yards rushing? They were daring the QB to beat them.

Running the inside zone every first down will leave them in second and long nearly every time, if they can't win up front. UNDSU isn't going to play them any differently and their D-line is every bit as good as Furman. There has to be some diversity of thought to keep them playing honestly. And getting McD in the groove early, can't possibly hurt anything.

Again, I think we need to see the offense we saw against MSU. It was perfect for teams with a better DLine. The short high percentage quick throws totally neutralizes their advantage
