Troxel told me that Louie-McGee, which is an awesome last name, will be a walk-on and will join for fall camp. He tried to get on at Idaho State, where his brother is a freshman receiver (I think that was pointed some where near the top of this thread). I'll have a small blog post at grizsports.com about it later

So, ISU thought he was too small? Man....I wonder if they even watched any film on him? Dude is slippery, fast, and tough to bring down. I can't wait to watch him against ISU for the next 4-5 years.... :thumb: :thumb:

Roster glut. ISU cut three scholarship receivers after spring ball.

Wasn't he trying to just walk on?

I'm assuming he was, but there are roster limits that include walk-ons. Perhaps the ISU coaching staff was honest with the young man and told him he wouldn't have much of a chance to play given the current depth at his position.

Interesting....because I wouldn't trade the Griz WR corps for ISU's...

Later than I expected, but here's more on Jerry Louie-McGee

Wow, the article references a 47 yard kickoff return average. If that stat is true, he could be a great asset in a couple years in the return game. Excited to see another kid with lots of potential joining the program.

“My favorite play this year, he caught about a 45-yard pass and scored against Post Falls. There was a block behind the play and they called it back. He was pissed off and he was coming back up the sidelines and said, ‘Give me the ball.’ I called a little bubble screen and he goes 55 yards for a touchdown and breaks about four or five tackles. He’s got that kind of desire.”

I saw him last summer and I can attest for his football speed. He can flat out play and he played on a team with an abundance of speed. He isn't big in any sense of the imagination and I can see where larger college teams would have a hard time seeing him fit in their offensive scheme because he isn't big enough to stay at RB and too small to play slot in most offensive schemes.

Couldn't imagine a better fit for the kid than playing in Stitt's system. So while a walk-on, he has a fighter's chance at find a niche here because he has running back traits which will make him popular in the short to intermediate routes that are the staple in this offense. He makes plays with his feet.

Worth a shot at giving him a chance.

Not to mention his potential as a returner. In the biggest regular season game last year, he took three kicks to the house (2 kickoffs and 1 punt).

Maybe my thinking is too simplistic, so humor me ... If Wes Welker can thrive in the slot in The NFL for 12 years at 5-9, 185 pounds, JLM at 5-9, 170 pounds, has a chance to at least do something similar in The Big Sky for 4 years, especially if he can bulk up to 180-185 pounds without sacrificing his speed.

There are no guarantees in football, where your next snap could be your last due to the physicality of the game, but on paper at least, I like JLM's chances.

And Coach Troxel's comments about him didn't hurt either !!!

Can walk-on players join the summer practice group? How about incoming frosh or transfers? Thanks

You have to be enrolled in summer school to join the summer practice groups....but if it's just players getting together for training or workouts, anybody can join

Hello everyone, this is Jerry's dad. I am also Jerry's position coach and have coached him since he was just a little guy. Let me answer your questions. Jerry's numbers were not up to par in track this year because he had a sledding accident on January 3rd and broke his knee cap. He wasn't even supposed to run track. But with three weeks left in track season, he decided to run. He is a competitor. He was not conditioned as well as he wanted to be. With three more weeks of running, he would have probably won. In the 100 meters, he was in the lead up to 80 meters and tightened up. I was just glad he tried it out and is running hard again.

You guys will not be disappointed with JLM. I can guarantee you that. He's up to 178 lbs and is ready to go. I have coached for 25 years and have never, I mean ever, seen a kid like him. He will make Grizz nation proud.

Thnx for the insight. Your son sounds like a true competitor and I'm sure Griz nation is gonna be happy to have him. Tell him good choice and I for one will be happy to see how he performs. I think this O will fit him well and he could do very well here.

FYI: If you're gonna be a fan of the Griz--and I'm sure you are....there's only ONE Z at the end. ;) ;) Otherwise you come off looking like an EWU fan...

I believe it says lots about your son when he is willing to walk on and prove himself ....that shows his competitive nature along with his self confidence....I'm sure he could have gone to d11, or naia with his ability and they would have loved to get him.....by the way he is in good company with walk ons here at Montana, most of the guys we have playing or have played in the nfl were walk ons....if im not mistaken.....welcome to the griz family...it really is a great school....go griz !

Mariani and Anderson were the only two walkons who are in the NFL. All the others were on scholarship I believe.

Correct. Tripp, Coyle, Wags, Poehls, Wilson, Tru were all on full-ride since day 1.
