Royce Engstrom Q&A

Royce may not plan to resign, however, I hope some folks superior to him are developing a different style of plan for his exit....soon. :thumb:
I think you may be right. This entire fiasco seems to be one bungled mess after another. The silence from the President's office is contributing to the negative views many now hold of UM. Poor management is making things worse, it appears. UM needs to clean house, if only for perception's sake.

Engstrom states or implies that UM personnel have done everything they should have during this entire fiasco, but that privacly laws and/or the conduct code have prevented UM personnel from taking some actions that may have been more desirable. I don't have a concern with him taking this position as long as he is held accountable for it. I'd love it if all three investigations turn up nothing, confirming Engstrom's position. But if the investigations do turn up something more than minor mistakes being made, Engstrom's lack of openness basically amounts to an "unless UM's caught UM has done nothing wrong" message being put out by the President's office, and he should be fired for it. If Engstrom can't come clean and admit UM's got problems when it has three investigations facing it, I certainly do not trust Engstrom's leadership and his ability to correct problems when no one is looking over his shoulder.

I don't know that he hasn't admitted a problem. The lack of openness unless I have missed something has been related to specifics in regard to students and staff 9requyired by law). He had to petition the NCAA to release information about their investigation (although I suspect thats because gee let the cat out of the bag with her emails) After numerous public meetings, release of a private investigation, I'm not sure what else is left.

Here's a question:

If you had been UM President during this entire fiasco, exactly how would you have handled it? Please be specific. Thank you.

P.S. - I'm not advocating for or against Engstrom, I'm just curious as to what exactly you would have done differently. Seems like a real $hit$how to me.

Engstrom has admitted that written documentation, in the form of the conduct code, statutes, procedures for disseminating information, etc., were deficient, which either prevented or not required UM personnel to take certain actions. For example, Barz' report stated that a UM employee failed to report a sexual assault up the chain of command, but Engstrom came out and stated that Pflu was not required to do so under the procedures in place at that time. Engstrom has taken steps to amend some of those documents to address the deficiencies, and I commend him for this.

But I am unaware of any instance where Engstrom has ever admitted that UM or any of its employees have done anything wrong, other than minor mistakes, even in a generic way. If that is actually the case I commend Engstrom for maintaining this position, especially considering the circumstances. If the investigations do reveal problems, however, and sanctions are imposed, Engstrom should be fired for failing to be open with the public and addressing the problems head-on. I fully understand the privacy issues involved, but if there are problems, Engstrom does have the ability to let the public know what those problems are, before the investigators do, in a generic manner that will not violate any privacy rights.

Or we could hire all of the mindless fools that work for the liberal controlled NBC, CNN, ABC, or ALL the other left leaning mainstream media outlets and listen to morons that don't know how to make money and have never signed the front of a check in their lives. That would be super! Yay I live in California and we spend ourselves bankrupt. Weeeeeeee!!!
calm down, there, Princess. Does your bunker have Direct TV? Since when are corporations into anything but making money and profit? You do realize that those media outlets you mention are corporate owned? Life must be a non ending struggle for you without even a trace of humor. Well, that's your problem, not mine. I am a LIBERAL who has made a lot of money...bet that pisses you off. Now, go join that militia group's beer bust...you know the one..

Your liberal (and I use that term lightly) use in calling everyone you don't agree with Princess, shows that you fit snugly into the land of fruits and nuts. You never want to address the facts when presented about your state. That is, it is bankrupt, full of illegals, full of gangs, full of entitlement babies. Yet you defend it as being a model for the rest of us. Keep your state, thank you. It is already lost, and will never be saved, especially with people like you continuing the "progressive" rhetoric.

I'm sure you made lots of money....as an employee. That is what allows liberals to remain liberals, they don't have to face reality much. Either that or you are a trustifarian with guilt over not earning your wealth. The leftist media makes money because the 60's kids are the biggest sector of society and they lean left. Not so hard to figure out toad. (get it, I'm the princess you are the toad! :D ). I put that funny thingy in there for you to laugh before your state goes bankrupt and bums you out dudester.

you are as stupid as your board name, after all.

argh!, you know I love ya, and respect your innate intelligence in areas of the sciences. But dude, if you do not see how f*cked up the state of California is, and how it is a forerunner of what will happen nationally if we keep up this insane spending and entitlement philosophy, then I suggest you go cross-campus and take a couple of Econ classes. ;)

i was commenting on the whole "you don't agree with me, so you must have political views i don't like and be a complete idiot" schtick. i hear that crap from both 'sides' all the time. it is brainless.

the government has fucked things up at all levels in cali, from local to state.

Haven't you heard? We now use "florioed up" for these kind of posts. :thumb:

Come now Chris, did this thread really have any more business not being relegated to the Locker Room than the "No-Confidence" and "Aronofsky Duties...." threads. We'll just have to contact somebody in authority at egriz about this blatant exercise in favoritism....Oh wait...uhh...forget it... ;) We've just identified one more "...nitpickish Griz/FCS purist(s)..." Sorta.

Agreed. I want to state once again that I am NOT a Republican. In fact, I voted for both Jimmy Carter (obviously a big mistake!), and Bill Clinton for president. I am a Libertarian, believing in a balanced budget, states rights, and a limited federal intrusion upon our lives.

Since we are not a true democracy anymore but some sort of capitalistic hybrid....maybe we should look at a new form of government.

How about socialism in its truest state? You know, without the bully dictator.

Since this thread is drifting hard I'll add this-

Link to UVa ouster of President and aftermath:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local...ust-sullivan/2012/06/14/gJQAXsBddV_story.html

Not quite analogous to the situation at UM but I find it an interesting contrast with how much information is being dribbled out over the last week and how hard those in positions of influence are pushing for more info. With how the situation is developing at UVa I think Engstrom may be "right" (from his perspective) to keep as much under wraps as possible.

Edit- fixed link

this thread was about asking Engstrom issues related to football and a discussion of those thoughts. The other threads were about University issues not relating to football.

the locker room is just as accessible as the football forum, you all can/should use it
