Roster Updates

No Malik Flowers either

Hmmmm, here's the write up on Malik from June. Gotta think he's a Griz but must admit I'm not sure. Sometimes our roster is not updated.

Cy Sirmon is a DE now and will emerge quickly.

Thought that would happen eventually. This is just my opinion but a common mistake is making big, thumping linebackers (with a quick twitch but not the greatest lateral movement) play middle linebacker against pass-heavy offenses where these monster athletes are reduced to chasing WRs instead of QBs. Sure, they will make plays in the run game but will get exposed in pass coverage more often than not. So what do you do? Let them rush the passer using their strengths at the line of scrimmage. Grant Collins and Tucker Schye are two recent in-state examples of kids who were intimidating forces in high school at MLB and transitioned to DE.

You want a hot take from me on the 2017 Griz season? Cy Sirmon is a starting DE opposite Tucker Schye by year end.
Agree with almost everything you said and I'm very high on Cy as well, but he won't be passing over Randy Rodriguez.

YES RR WILL BE A BEAST!

Fixed that "could be" to "will be"

Perhaps between Sirmon and RR's potential is why Gilfoy is gone

Take this for what it's worth but at one practice this spring I was told that one of the D-line transfers couldn't even bench 225. A quick look at both Favoroso and Gilfoy would lead me to think that Gilfoy might have been that guy. Maybe it was too much of a step up for him?

I can confirm this was true and I think that was the case.

Actually he is listed on the roster underneath Dick in the TBD jersey number section.

That's why its a "hot take" ;) . Also, Rodriguez will be Jesse Sims backup at DT and getting reps on the interior of the defensive line this fall. Another "hot take"?

Yikes, did your source mention how much Rodriguez is weighing now? He must be piling on the lbs! He's definitely one of those guys who plays bigger than his weight because he's so explosive, but he can't be playing inside at 240.

Bryan Waldhauser was an All-Big Sky DT at about 245-250 lbs.

They have him listed at 1709 lbs. Gotta be the biggest WR ever!

You'd have to ask the coaches, however going off chatter here and a few other things:

1. We had only 1 returning DE that was an upperclassmen (Schye) and the rest were still developing/inexperienced younger guys.

2. Favoroso was clearly a much needed addition and a splash so far, but depth concerns remained and JuCo transfers can be hit or miss, so might as well get another as an insurance plan.

3. Fortunately Rodriguez showed his versatility (following in footsteps of Peevey and Bienemann) and Sirmon making a good transition so far.

4. Gilfoy had a hard time adapting, bench press or not, he lost ground to Rodriguez and Sirmon. I think he was even sharing reps with the 3rd team guys, Maua and Harris.

--------
If this roster is updated and accurate it's a bummer because I think with a year redshirting and under Nicholson's plan Dylan could become a guy to step up in 2018.

Sweet crap, I'll be 42 in a month and I can still bench 225, 7 or 8 times. Not that it's the only thing, but you need that strength for separation on the line

Yeah and he played at 250 his junior year. Remember, its not a fact Randy is going to play DT...its a hot take (aka a bold prediction).

I thought I heard someone else say he was moving inside too so figured you guys heard it was a done deal. Long as we get him on the field.

Gilfoy lead that state of CA in sacks... lots of competition at UM... which is a good thing for us!
