Will Aaron be a junior? Or did he get a medical and is a Sophmore?

More than likely, if not mistaken. 2009 a Redshirt; 2010 lost due to injury. 2011 ? 2012 most likely a junior listed with a chance to petition for eligibility for 2014, if he can last that long. Thus, three years playing eligibility with a sixth year (senior) granted, overall, if, in fact, the NCAA does do so; which isn't unheard of these days.

So as I see it:

2009: Frosh
2010: RS Frosh
2011: Soph
2012: Junior

I believe there's a whole thing about the "clock ticking" once you start (which Jimmy Wilson had to appeal) so he'd be on pace to be a junior if he returned in 2012. Additionally I'm not sure if he could get a medical RS, guess we'll have to wait and see.

Since his injury put him out for two seasons I thought he might qualify for a 6th year.

I believe a medical redshirt would trump the 5-year rule.

For example, a player typically arrives at a school and takes a "red-shirt" (in-active) season. He then is activated and plays the following four years. That period obviously covers five seasons.

However if that player suffers a season ending injury extremely early in an active season he may then apply for and possibly recieve from the NCAA a "medical redshirt", which grants the injured player a 6th year of eligibility.

My understanding is that your scenario is wrong. Roberts used his redshirt year and then missed the following 2 years. Harris will not be getting last year back even though he redshirted his freshman year and played as a redshirt freshman. He lost it to injury. I believe a medical redshirt is actually a medical hardship and only comes into play if a playes basically loses 2 years of playing due to injury. This would apply to roberts. He redshirted due to the ACL. Missed the next year as it was not ready, and quit this year too. 2 years missed due to injury plus his redshirt year. He could apply for a 6th year.

While I think it's easier to get a medical redshirt if one hasn't redshirted (and this assumes an injury during the early part of a season, so a regular redshirt can't be taken), there's no two-year requirement. For example, Ochs received a medical redshirt after playing 2 games and some minutes of his junior year at Colorado. He had also played his frosh and sophomore years at Colo. He was then able to play 2 years at UM, due to getting a medical redshirt. So, he actually played in games in 5 different years. Medical redshirt is a bit mysterious, though.

I couldn't imagine why he wouldn't get a medical redshirt. It seems like this is the ideal situation of why a player deserves a 6th year.

I'm going totally from memory here, so there's no way I could be wrong. :lol: But didn't Josh Paffhausen get a 6th year of eligibility with the Griz in the 90's for a medical hardship?

I also think Josh Harris is going to petition for one at the end of this season.

Not sure about Paffhausen. Ochs missed the majority of 2 seasons so he petitioned and received it. He had not used a redshirt year. Roberts has not played in the 3 years he has been here, so he probably has a pretty good shot at it. Josh Harris is a big long shot. He only missed one year. He probably wont get one.

Nope, Ochs did not miss the majority of two seasons. He started his true frosh and sophomore years at Colo. He got hurt early in the 3rd game of his junior year. He announced several months later that he was not returning to Colo. He came to UM to visit Joe Glenn later in the fall. He transferred to UM in January. He started the next two years at UM. He missed only most of one season, i.e. his junior year at Colo.

No, he actually played a whole season without an acl or mcl can't remember which and with just a brace on his knee. He got a ligament out of a cadaver after the season.
