For a house in Bozeman, that is. The new coach will be announced in 10-14 days.
A former Griz coach taking the helm at our rival? Hard to fathom.
Is this the "changing of the guard" or the "power shift in Montana" theory talking?doc3kgt said:What a pompous ass. I would pay ALOT of money for you to get up an say that to the coaching staff and kids that work their asses off for this program. Goddamn you make yourself look bad...
So, does firing Ash, in such an awkward, public and stumbling fashion, the first workday after a loss to the Griz, piled on top of a losing season, confirm or refute the opinions of that "large portion of our fanbase" that you "heard from?" What is your point?ilovethecats said:this is so funny to me. all we've heard from a large portion of your fanbase for years is how bad ash sucks. how our schedule is weak and we can't beat anyone.
Thanks. Who gave it you? :mrgreen:doc3kgt said:Congratulations UMGriz75. You are the winner of the annual Egriz dipshit award for the 2015 season.

Ash brought the Cats back to respectability and close to being a more than infrequent contender, and was the winningest coach in MSU history. That is almost impressive. I was surprised that he did that well. Kramer did a lot for the Cats too, before he was fired, but he didn't come close to Ash's success.
Expectations rose, but Ash and the Cats couldn't fulfill those high, and I would say overly high, expectations. Started fast in many years, and often but not always, faded later in the year. A perhaps explainable fade 2 years ago, with McGhee hurt. A horrible fade last year. Huge missed expectations this year. Not much ability to beat the rival. The boosters and fans turned on him. That's football in the modern era. I don't know what went wrong this year or last year, but I thought Cat fan expectations were unrealistic in both years.
Fields is fairly weak from what I hear. He was just listening to the boosters and fans this season, as I suppose an AD should. However, part of this, maybe only a small part of this, is Fields pointing the finger at Ash--to deflect criticism from himself and perhaps save his own job. We'll see who Fields hires, and we'll see how the new hire does, but my guess is that Fields probably isn't going to be around for too long either.
Ash did better than I thought he would. He's not a spring chicken anymore, and he seems not to be performing at the fairly high level he was performing at several years ago. Perhaps it was time for a change. I don't have a problem with how it ended. Ash helped build the high expectations, and now those expectations have pushed him out. He did well, in my view, and the program has been without major issues for years. The facilites and attendance are much improved. I think he was pretty boring and uninspiring, but he was a successful, or fairly successful, coach.
He can hold his head high. I think he's a good man. I have never made fun of him, and never will.

2. Danny Langsdorf - Nebraska OC
3. John Wristen - Colorado State Pueblo - 2014 Div II Coach of the Year
4. Jed Stugart - University of Sioux Falls
5. Bobby Hauck - SDSU
Realistically #3 might be in the running...

Why have we fired most football coaches since 1971?

ilovethecats said:ok, i'll try shorter and sweeter. this will not be an issue for the candidates because they'll have common sense and stats available. ash didn't get fired because of one losing season and losing to the griz. so why would this made up scenario make it difficult to land a good candidate?mcg said:ilovethecats said:while i'm not surprised some are trying to make this all about the griz, it's just not the case. what UM75 is saying is also not the case. i know many big time boosters. i was in the quarterback club tonight where ash spoke. very somber by the way.mcg said:It seems to me the problem the kitties are going to have finding a new coach is that candidates will see that when you win 8 games per year and run a squeeky clean program, if you have 5-6 season and don't beat the Griz you are gone.
not every booster is going to like head coaches. just as some weren't donating money while ash was here, some may stop giving because ash is gone. but the arrogance over here is striking. ash wasn't this incredible coach who only got fired because he couldn't beat the griz...
the irony of these posts is unbelievable. i could find a thousand posts here about how shitty ash was. how he couldn't beat the griz. how he didn't win in november. about how he couldn't beat ewu or other teams relevant in the big sky. about how you wanted him to stay forever because you knew all these flaws. now we do something about it and some are acting like it's some crazy travesty.
some are being way too dramatic anyway. did some of you really not see the writing on the wall? ash is an excellent guy. i think he's a good coach too. not great but good. he ran a tight ship and from everything i've heard players liked him. he won many games, but most of those games were ones we should have won. he got fired for several reasons. his record against the griz and eagles was terrible. he had a poor record against teams .500 or better. in big games we lost...we got hammered. our record in the playoffs was not good. and he had a terrible defense last year and chose not to fix it only to see it get worse this year.
we could have kept ash. he likely would have had a winning record again next year. if he stuck around long enough he could build up another streak of winning seasons. winning records in the big sky conference, especially with our out of conference schedules haven't been difficult to achieve. but it doesn't matter if we keep getting drilled by the griz, the eagles, and any team we happen to meet in the playoffs.
people can keep harping on the fact that we fired this poor coach after one losing season. that we have such crazy expectations to do so. i wouldn't expect anything else on this board. people can try to make this as bad as they want because ash had an overall good win/loss record. but anyone with any objectivity can look at the stats and see that he just wasn't getting the job done in the games that mattered. he said as much this evening.
i wish rob all the best. but i refuse to think i'm delusional for wanting a guy to not only have a winning season, but also not get hammered by any decent team we play.
I don't understand your response to my post, which did nothing more than state the obvious.
now, if candidates see that we expect to make the playoffs, expect to beat the griz on occasion, expect that if we lose to not get blown out, and expect to beat good teams and this scares them off....we don't want them anyway.

That's a really good post, I agree with every word. In many ways Ash was a victim of the expectations he created. He created just enough belief in the cat fan base to get fired.

Wristen has a domestic violence charge on his record for striking his wife and children. Can't see Fields and Waded going there.
Stugart is a possibility; perhaps too much of an unknown name.
5 is NOT happening.
br fan said:I haven't waded through all the posts here and on BN, but I am kind of intrigued on the manner in which Ash was let go. Despite Ash's inability the last few years to elevate the program, he did do a lot for the Cat program, he's a good (but not great) coach, and he has the most wins in MSU history. I would think that with that resume MSU attempted to let him go gracefully, i.e. let him know he was going to be fired but give him the option to resign. Perhaps I reading too much into this but I'm assuming Ash refused to resign, and I'm curious as to what he hoped to accomplish by forcing MSU to fire him.
