76-61. Griz.

Would think on a Sunday more people would be there. Seems like a fun activity for a Sunday in December in Missoula.

It's an NFL Sunday
People are getting ready for Christmas
It's mid-finals week. Students are either preparing for the last of their finals, or if they are done, they are home for the break.

You are right. However, I was thinking more along the lines of local non-student support. Missoula has grown into a fairly good sized town for Montana. I am not surprised as basketball has not been impressively followed for years but I guess I think in general we should have better attendance.

IMO, Missoula is called a college town, but in reality it is not. It likes the money of being a college town but locals do not really support the School as one would hope for having over 80k living in the immediate area

Unfortunately, I think you are right putter.

Rorie (22) and Akoh (17) were both terrific. Rorie controls the offense nicely. Akoh was 9-9 from the line. Great improvement from earlier in season. Oguine was in double digits. Akoh had 12 rebounds. He is very strong, and good. Rorie's last 2 home games have been outstanding.

Moorehead had his normal strong game, was 2-5 from 3, despite missing some good looks, and got about 8 rebounds. Krslovich had a nice game and got more minutes.

Griz shot about 50%, but only 27% or so from 3. They need to improve the 3 shooting.

Griz played well, but not awesome. Got some bad turnovers early. Riverside isn't very good. Shot poorly until later in the game.

Griz were the much better team, and but for a lapse later in the game when some subs came in, would have won by 30 or more. Riverside had a couple guards with quick hands, a big stud in the middle who got some blocks.

Griz didn't get many assists, but had some nice passes. Attendance about 2800. Refs were good, but probably wasn't a hard game to ref.

Blane Taylor is an assistant for Tuesday's opponent, Irvine. His 2d year.

I went to the game & agree with everything PlayerRep wrote. I'd add:

Mike Oguine had a slow start (seemed to be some friction between him & a couple of Riverside players) but broke out nicely in the second half. Sayeed Pridgett seemed off his game a bit, but had one of the nicest floaters off of a baseline drive I've seen this year. True frosh Karl Nicholas & Timmy Falls gave the Griz good minutes off the bench. Expect a breakout from Nicholas anytime now & Falls showed he's got shooting potential. Both tough kids who don't back down. Felt sorta bad for some of the other bench players who got floor time after Montana got up by 29. Trever Spoja had an open look for a trey ring out on him. This team seems to be getting into very solid defensive shape. Riverside's zone was a tough test, but the Griz ripped it apart early in the second half. A good opponent to play going into conference action. Tuesday's game should be significantly tougher.

Good points by Journal. All true.

I actually disagree. I've been to a lot of great "college towns" (Lincoln, Manhattan, Knoxville, State College, Iowa City, Chapel HIll, College Station, etc) and there are few places where you see as much outward affection for the university. I challenge you to walk into more than ten businesses in town that don't have Griz materials up. Couple that with the amount of Griz wear you see in town and there are few like it.

Now, there is a segment of Missoula (including, sadly, the local paper) which is negative toward UM, and I find that confounding.

I just think that college basketball attendance is down all over, and a Sunday afternoon in mid December is a horrible time to play a game.

I would not use business owners as an example of griz support. In total, business owners represent a small minority of the population and many directly benefit from Griz athletics and so of course have Griz gear up. There is still a large population to tap into that are not current regular supporters of Griz athletics that probably have nothing better to do on a Sunday in December.

Well of course. Just like there is a large population not into opera, or dungeons and dragons, or hiking, or any other entertainment activity. I'd still argue the percentage of Missoulians who care about the University and Griz athletics is extremely high. And a Sunday afternoon in mid December during finals week will always be a terrible time for a BB game.

So your argument is that support for griz athletics is high and we have maximized attendance for basketball given the current population of the city, all things considered.

Ummmm....what now again?

My point was to disagree with the statement that Missoula is not a good college town, and that most residents do not support UM. Oh, and that a mid December Sunday afternoon game during finals week is a terrible time for a game.

You’ll note tonight’s attendance was a season high. Do I wish we could draw 7300 every game? Of course. Does the fact that we do not make Missoula a bad college town filled with non-supporters? No.

A season high means nothing. It is still low. I agree with PR that we should be able to draw 5000 regularly. I never said Missoula was a bad college town but I do think like a lot of college towns there is a lot of people that only show up when the team wins. I also think putter was saying for a town its size Missoula has more detractors of college athletics than most which I think may very well be true.

I was put on a waiting list the first year I came to town. There were more seats then too.

Your problem is simple, Earthlings ... you are confusing support for the sports program with support for the U. Many people who have little interest in jock antics support and have great interest in other aspects of the school and highly value its benefits. I know this seems strange as what is all that academic, dramatic, musical and intellectual shit all about, anywaze.
