Rhodes Scholar!?

I agree it is very impressive to play football and maintain his rigorous academic schedule, but you can't discount what the other candidates have done as well. Most of them were involved in many more things besides just academics. I'm guessing every one of the candidates was deserving.

He plays football on top of a 4.0 GPA...wonder what they look for when selecting because that seems like a perfect Rhodes Scholar

Someone who just has a 4.0. Jocks need not apply.

Yeah but it's probably harder for him to maintain a 4.0 then the kids that do nothing but school work

So the committee didn't give it to him? Are they still in Seattle? EG and I are on this. We'll find out where they are staying and bring a couple of hard pipe hittin' African Americans gentleman to go to work on those eggheads.

Oxford. They prolly wear shoes like coach Ron ash's.

If you read the bios on these kids, they're full of worK on social justice issues. Don't know how much of that Crit has. No knock on the winners. It's just the way the contest is judged. Bet none of the winners would make Academic All-American in football.

Thanks for the chuckle and the Pulp Fiction reference.

Wonder how many of the Oxford bound could have played football (or any D1 sport) and made their grades. That alone is very very impressive. DC is an inspiration.

Especially in Chemistry which rumor has is one of the most difficult programs on campus. A friend of mine said one of the professors showed a chart to the class of the previous years grades with over 80% of the class failing.

Did you read the bios of the district winners? One wrote speeches for Secretary General, ran a nuclear generator at age 17, helps blind kids, EMT on campus, political this and that. The other was the youngest delicate to the U.N. Say whaaaaat?

Just have to clarify, as I am proud as hell of this kid-

I am actually suggesting, be it partially tongue-in-cheek, that being a football player could have hurt him with the pencil neck committee. I hope not, but I am bitter by my very nature.

I wouldn't doubt it. I had a Biochemistry professor tell me I wasn't dedicated enough because I asked about an alternate test time once. Why? I had to work to pay for school.

This is a bullshit decision. We should schedule Oxford next year for one of our non-conference games. Teach those crumpet and tea eggheads some manners.

On a serious note, hard luck Derek. You deserved it and are a role model not just to scholar athletes but all of us. I can't wait to see what wonders you will accomplish down the road.

14 of the 32 US Rhodes Scholars were from the Ivy league, including both from the Seattle/Northwest region. Here are the blurbs of the Seattle ones:

DISTRICT 14 Oregon Jared C. Milfred, Portland, is a senior at Yale University, where he will receive a B.A. in Ethics, Politics, and Economics. He has combined research in political theory and political science with a passion for social justice advocacy and campaign finance reform. He founded the nonpartisan student advocacy organizations Democracy United, serves as the Chief Executive of the National Council of City Public Financing Agencies, and chairs the City of New Haven Campaign Finance Board. Jared worked as a speechwriter for U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and is Editor-in-Chief of Yale’s Journal of Political Thought, as well as the Ethics Editor of the Yale Philosophy Review. He volunteers as an EMT for Yale Emergency Medical Services and as a reader for blind students at Yale’s Office on Disabilities. At age 17, Jared became the youngest licensed nuclear reactor operator in the United States. He willpursue an M.Phil. in Political Theory at Oxford.

Washington Mason Y. Ji, Shoreline, is a senior at Yale, majoring in Global Affairs. He was also a student at the School of International Studies at Peking University. His senior thesis explains how deepened East-West dialogue has given rise to multicultural dispute resolution mechanisms. Mason was also, at age 18, the youngest U.N. delegate, and adviser to the Mission of the
Republic of the Seychelles, and co-authored a document that influenced the 2014 U.S.-China joint statement on climate change. He has interned at the White House and for one of China’s largest law firms, is a competitive table tennis player in the U.S. and China, and a principal oboist for the Yale Concert Band. He will do the M.Phil. in International Relations at Oxford.

There was a woman from UM who was a finalist a few years ago, and a finalist for the Mitchell scholarship as well. She didn't get either. Do we need to fire the person who coaches our scholar candidates? Where's the for sale sign for HIS yard?!*

Go Griz!

*Hope to goodness some of you realize I'm kidding. It does make one wonder how li'l UM preps our rare candidates. We have had some high numbers for a public, non-military college... A decade go, UM was 19th in the nation and if you took out private colleges and military academies, we were 4th or 5th.

Most 4.0's are easy compared to a 4.0 in chemistry. I am a good judge of that.

I am disappointed with this outcome yet proud as hell of our Whitefish lad making it to this point in the process. He is an exceptional young man and no doubt will excel in life.

Hopefully he will also take out some frustration / aggression on the So Dakota State QB & running backs.

Isn't it great that ag1 has such high standards. I still can't believe someone would post something like that.

As long as you are happy getting rolled in the playoffs............then good on you.

I have a higher standard, just like the Rhodes scholar selection group.

While it's disappointing that he wasn't awarded the prize, rest assured there are going to be a myriad of other opportunities for DC to pick and choose from upon graduation. He's a rare combination of intelligence, talent, desire and humbleness. He's going to make a huge difference in our world, of that you should have no doubt.
