IMO, these dominant teams, at lower levels of competition, are not necessarily elite. Like I said, maybe NDSU currently and the Griz teams from the 2000's qualify because of the "aura" surrounding their respective programs. A fan today could certainly make an argument that NDSU could compete and possibly beat a majority of FBS teams. Other than the SEC and PAC-12, NDSU could be thriving members of any FBS conference IMO. That's elite to me. The bison transcend their surroundings. The Griz program from 10-15 years ago was in many ways very similar to where NDSU is now.
The question posed in this thread relates to being elite in FCS. See the thread title. The question is not just an elite program. Again, there is no question that Mount Union is an elite (really the elite) program in D-III. There is also no question that UM is an elite program in FCS, in my view. No one has questioned whether NDSU is an elite FBS program. Of course, they are at this time.
Let's see you list of elite FBS programs at this time.
Traditional National Powers(not necessarily elite all the time)
USC
ND
Michigan
Ohio State
Texas
Oklahoma
Nebraska
Penn State
Florida
Florida State
Alabama
Recent Elite FBS Teams IMO
Alabama
Florida( under Meyer)
USC(under Carroll)
Texas(7-8 years ago)
Florida State
I will finish my point with this statement. The greatest college sports program in history was arguably John Wooden's UCLA basketball teams of the late 60's and early 70's. In the years after Wooden's retirement until Jim Harrick, the Bruins were rarely considered elite. Notre Dame football has had long stretches of not being elite too. In fact, many teams on my list of traditional national powers have suffered thru long periods of not being elite also.
Can you not stick to the topic of elite FCS programs?

Yes PR. I can stick to the FCS. But check your post again. You asked me for my elite FBS list of programs. My point is the same whether it's FCS or FBS. A program can be a traditional power without being an elite program. IMO, right now, NDSU is the only elite program in the FCS.

Nope, or EWU. Like I said, you guys have an incredible history. Maybe a better question\poll would be, who has a better football program today between UM, MSU, and EWU? Rank them.

How far back do you want to go? Using 2010 as a benchmark, I'd say EWU, UM, MSU.
AllWeatherFan said:EWU was NAIA until 2010, but they had a program that gave the lower half of the Frontier Conference fits!
And what's the logic? Ok so if you’re using 2010, let’s see how the teams stack up. Unless my math is wrong, here is what the records show – and I’m even leaving in the vacated wins even though the NCAA yanked them out.Htowngriz said:poorgriz said:BadlandsGrizFan said:Htowngriz said:So, the results are in...
