Returning to an elite FCS program

Elite FBS programs at this time is easy

Alabama

That is my list. All the other big programs are not winning titles. You might be able to add Auburn and LSU into this but that is it. Elite is elite, it is not for evey one.

OK what about FSU??? they just won it....I noticed you went on to make it a total of 3 programs....so I would say NDSU, Montana, and maybe Villanova or possibly SHSU...the others would have been App State and Georgia Southern...but they up and left.

Ndsu, App st and Georgia southern maybe Villanova but that is it. Montana is good but they are not elite and you can make a case for them to never have been. Griz had 2 good years in the last 20 and some years they won some games but really outside of the state never competed on a level like the schools listed. Thinking otherwise is pure poppycock.

haha who is this assclown?

This isn't a subject that should be debated. The answer to returning to the elite is simple;
WIN! WIN! WIN! BABY WIN!

Q: how do you know you have an elite program?

A: When there isn't what is sure to be a 15 page thread, justifying why you are or aren't an elite program.

Ten years ago this wouldn't have been a topic.

Q: How do you know you still have an elite program?

A: When a poster who is too f*cking embarrased to admit he's a cat fan makes up a fake name starts a thread on how the team he hates isn't an elite program, and over a dozen other cat fans jump in to say, Hell Yeah, the Griz aren't an elite program!!!! Although they can't state why.

Here's an idea f^ckhead: take me up on my challenge. Start a thread on AGS and ask who the elite programs in the FCS are. If the Griz aren't named as one of 3 in at least 70 percent of the posts, I'll come crawling back here and tell you how right your are.

Huh. No kitty fan is willing to do that. I wonder why?

Oh wait! I DON"T wonder, actually. Because they won't do it because they KNOW that the Griz are an elite program at this level. Period. END FU*KING THREAD!!!!

what he meant to say Sylvester, is welcome to the board! :thumb:

I am 36 years old, and the Griz were good (but not elite) when I graduated back in 1979.

Times change.

Yes, without a doubt, Mount Union is an elite D-III football program. Could anyone possibly disagree?

"Through the 2012 season, Mount Union football has won 11 Division III National Championships and 25 OAC titles, which includes a streak of 22 consecutive conference titles dating back to 1992. Additionally, the Purple Raiders own the NCAA football record for consecutive victories, with 55, set from 2000–2003, which broke their previous record of 54, set from 1996–1999. With the Purple Raiders' success, former head coach Larry Kehres holds the record for highest winning percentage, .929, for coaches with minimum 200 career wins, over his 27 seasons (1986–2012) as coach at Mount Union."

I believe an earlier poster said it best when he said that everyone's definition of ELITE is a little different. IMO, these dominant teams, at lower levels of competition, are not necessarily elite. Like I said, maybe NDSU currently and the Griz teams from the 2000's qualify because of the "aura" surrounding their respective programs. A fan today could certainly make an argument that NDSU could compete and possibly beat a majority of FBS teams. Other than the SEC and PAC-12, NDSU could be thriving members of any FBS conference IMO. That's elite to me. The bison transcend their surroundings. The Griz program from 10-15 years ago was in many ways very similar to where NDSU is now.

The question posed in this thread relates to being elite in FCS. See the thread title. The question is not just an elite program. Again, there is no question that Mount Union is an elite (really the elite) program in D-III. There is also no question that UM is an elite program in FCS, in my view. No one has questioned whether NDSU is an elite FBS program. Of course, they are at this time.

Let's see you list of elite FBS programs at this time.
I'll answer this way-

Traditional National Powers(not necessarily elite all the time)
USC
ND
Michigan
Ohio State
Texas
Oklahoma
Nebraska
Penn State
Florida
Florida State
Alabama

Recent Elite FBS Teams IMO
Alabama
Florida( under Meyer)
USC(under Carroll)
Texas(7-8 years ago)
Florida State

I will finish my point with this statement. The greatest college sports program in history was arguably John Wooden's UCLA basketball teams of the late 60's and early 70's. In the years after Wooden's retirement until Jim Harrick, the Bruins were rarely considered elite. Notre Dame football has had long stretches of not being elite too. In fact, many teams on my list of traditional national powers have suffered thru long periods of not being elite also.

Can you not stick to the topic of elite FCS programs?

O.K., let's move on from the pissing contest about whether we are an elite program at present. Let's just agree to disagree.

But I would like to challenge contributors to this thread, and even non-contributing hacks like Everett, to comment on this:

Re-read my original post, including my formula for getting this program back on track towards greatness again. I maintain that, if our AD would implement my formula, we would be MUCH MORE DOMINANT three years from now than if we stay the course. Agree, or not agree?

As for my comment that any new head coach be required to keep 3 assistants, I am thinking that he would WANT TO keep the recruiting coordinator, Scott Cragg as the O-line coach, and Green as the RB coach. Since I am not sure who is the recruiting coordinator (it may be one of these two anyway), we may only have to require the new coach t keep 2 of the assistants.

Let's see your list of current FCS eltite football programs.

If I am correct, and I think I am, Montana was never ranked lower than #5 pre-season for 20 straight years! If that was not elite, then what program was??? But that was in the past, and NOW is NOW! That is why I am so adamant about getting back to that level, and how to do so. It ain't gonna happen with this old man calling the shots with his 1980's offense.

That's not true regarding UM being top 5 preseason for 20 years.

I think the year of the 1995 championship, the Griz preseason ranking was 12th.

Who is Scott Cragg?

You two know each other?

Never, in all of my 62 years, have I ever seen math so bad. They certainly didn't teach it that way back in the 1920s when I was at UM. And I know they didn't teach it that way when my 57 year old son played DB for the Griz during the early 2000s.
