Simis had a great game running the same dumbed-down version of our offense against a greatly inferior opponent in 2015 ... And then pooped his big boy pants against Portland State. Gustafson came back eventually to salvage the season and take us into the playoffs.

Folks, that's why we need to not panic and ride the "Gus train" for the rest of this season. Chalich far from sucks, but Gus simply gives us the best chance to win going forward.

Don't take that wrong... Not throwing Simis under the bus. He did the best he could under the circumstances, he just couldn't run Stitt's full offense. Simis is impressively changing positions and appears to be q stand up, dedicated guy. The "Chuck it up and pray" method only works until the defense adjusts for it (like what happened in the second half against ISU).

For instance... Few bubble screens, few pre-snap check downs, not going through progressions (knew who he was throwing to before the snap). Only threw the ball 27 times. That's the same thing Simis did last season... Worked the first game, but as soon as it was on tape for other teams to scout, it crapped out.

Greatly inferior? UND was second in the conference in total defense in 2015, ranked just behind Montana in scoring defense, and ranked second in the conference in sacks, just behind Montana. Remembering Santiago, UND had the conference leading rusher last year. UND ended the conference season 5-3, just behind Montana at 6-2. UND beat Cal Poly 45-21 at Cal Poly, while we managed just 19 points losing to Cal Poly at home, just after Stitt announced to all the world, "we don't lose in our own house." UND scored three more points than we did against NDSU while keeping NDSU to three fewer points than we did.

Backwards. The three quarters were the best use of a running game UM attempted all year (265 yds, Simis put up 105). Put us up 24-13. Stitt admitted that in the 4th Q he wanted to go back to a passing game ("you have to pass sometime") and also tried to run the clock ("we went conservative to protect the score.")

ISU Defense didn't adjust for it in the 4thQ, it is what they had prepared for in the first place and Stitt went back to it; abandoning a very successful strategy for a nearly unsuccessful one.

Don't mind me if I am skeptical with it going into the playoffs where the defenses don't allow 500 ypg

True but both QBs would have to "step it up" in the playoffs IMO. The men and the boys get separated pretty quickly in the playoffs....

I agree... Good enough works... Until you don't make the playoffs... Then unfortunately it turns into NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

I would prefer to look at who gives us the best chance to have a deep run in the playoffs. I guess I would rather go with the QB who was "chucking" it down field and getting lucky. Why? Because he was looking down field instead of at the sidelines every damn play. Lateral vs vertical. I will take vertical thank you very much
 
What really is best is when lateral and vertical are used to complement each other.

Stitt SPECIFICALLY SAID he did NOT. Said he knows the offense backwards and forwards like the back of his hand....so he "actually sorta" didn't.
