Because what 99.99999% of people believes matters.
Look, I could win my Over 40 sectionals tennis tournament and call it a US Open championship. Is it? Fuuuuuuuuck no. I couldn’t get a game off those guys. Is it a nice deal? Sure, and something to be proud of. But to call any championship below the highest level a “national” championship is a lie.
Still not mythical...Clawing through a bunch of teams that 99% of the world never heard of.
Which team won the Washington HS State Football Championship last year?
Levels are baked into nearly every sport. I'm not disagreeing with your bigger points here, but this particular argument ignores some things.
The sports universe is literally a tiered, league systems....pick a sport, any sport...

Championships at every level are great and are remembered, at least by the people who were there. What a silly statement.
I don't follow Wa HS football but according to google Lake Stevens won the 4A title. Ans something called Liberty Bell (after 30 years in Washington something or someplace I've never heard of) won the 1B title.
Now, if you asked anyone in the state if liberty bell could beat Lake Stevens you'd need to help them off the floor 15 minutes later after they stopped laughing.
So I ask you: did liberty bell win some kind of a title? Yes. Was it significant to them? Absolutely. Was it a state title? Are you fucking kidding me? No, no it was not. And no fcs title is a national title. As you suggest, sports are tiered. And each level can and should have a title. But we need to dial back on the whole "national" thing.
I mean, imagine the USFL champion calling themselves "world Champions". Silly right?
Same deal with the fcs.
I get it - the Chiefs are not World Champions.
If your objection is the title FCS NATIONAL championship, I can get on board.
But, man, I really like saying "natty."

The FCS champ doesn’t call themself world champ. Nor does the winner of the Kittle League World Series.

Remember Marshall. They lost 49-14 to Ohio St yesterday. Total yards were 568 to 264. That must have been fun for Marshall fans. Ha. I’ll take Montana v Western Carolina.

Or Montana vs Morehead St? How'd you like that one....real entertaining.
Would moving up get rid of those games, though? LSU recently played Nichols, who is an FCS team Sac State beat 34-7 recently.
I am still really torn on a lot of this, so I'm not really trying to argue against moving up. But even if we do, we are still do some of those non-competitive blowout games every year in the non-conference play, I would imagine.

Who cares if 99% of world has never heard of the teams? Griz fans have. Montanans have. All of my friends all over the world have. The FBS playoffs are awesome. More fun than the 4-team FBS playoffs. 99.9% of world has never heard of the Montana high school champions, but winning a state championship is awesome. The FCS playoffs are a lot of fun, but at this point the first round is really blah. We don’t need a 24 team playoff as watered down as the lower ranks of the FCS have gotten. I think that will really show when we rank the top 16 this year. I doubt there will be many upsets in the first round by non seeded teams over the 8-16 seed. The tournament will begin the second weekend as usual.
I do hope the upper division is heading for a separation and we see the group of five becoming a mid major level and have its own playoffs which would essentially be the FCS of old plus a bunch of other FBS bottom dwellers that would be competitive at that level.
If that were to happen and we were able to move up we could again see matchups against App State, JMU, Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Sam Houston who used to be peer institutions. But we could also see a service acadamy home and home. Imagine seeing the Army black knights, Air Force Falcons or Navy midshipmen here for a military appreciation day. The addition of another border rival with Wyoming has huge appeal and our scheduling becomes a lot easier as a lot of those teams won’t be afraid to come here.
Also if you take a look at the map of group of 5 teams there is a huge void in the Midwest (Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri) and Montana. I think as you pointed out we probably can’t afford to go to the Mountain West, but we also can’t afford not to move up in the above scenario. I think the SnowBelt conference actually makes a ton of sense to move with Idaho and the Dakota's plus a few more schools with similar institutions that spend around the same amount as we do currently and have similar state funding.
They're awesome, but become considerably less and less awesome every year. They won't be so awesome when we're the only legit program left facing off against a bunch of non-scholarships and former DIIs.
You can be an ostrich if you so choose, but some of us like to keep our heads up and have long-term vision. And that vision absolutely must NOT entail remaining at the fcs level as it portends to be in 10 years.
Are we absolutely certain that when the P5 teams leave, the NCAA doesn't just fold the Big Sky and Missouri Valley into the new D1 groupings with the G5 teams?
Again, I'm not trying to argue to stay, I'm still really torn on this. But I'd imagine that is a possibility that the NCAA would look at when re-aligning the FBS/FCS structure when the Power 5 teams leave, and give the Northern Colorados of the conferences a chance to play with the DII schools? I'm not sure why that is always considered off the table. And Everett, I say this with all genuineness, I ask this of you becuase you have paid a lot more attention to this than I have, so I defer to your understanding of those possibilities.

Here it is one week later, and App State gets rolled again, this time by mother nature. They canceled the home game with Liberty due to 'severe impact' to the school and area wrought by Hurricaine Helene. Game not to be rescheduled. Sometimes, when it rains it pours, pun intended.
