Everyone has an inability to stop the run in stretches, but our run defense was one of the best in the nation and our conference. It was 38th in the nation and tied for second (even if you take out the sacks and add the sack yards back in) in the Big Sky. We played the top five rush teams in the BSC and NDSU twice. Our defense was fourth (missed 3rd by 0.1) in scoring, 2nd in total defense, 2nd in run defense and 3rd in pass defense. So the run D was ranked higher than our pass D, which was very good also.
There's little room for improvement. Our stud DE is gone and he led the league in tackles by a DE. Our stud DT, who led the league in tackles by a DT, is moving to DE and we don't really know if he's as good as Holmes or if the guy replacing him will be as good as he was at DT. All our LBs are gone. To improve we'll need Kidder to be better than Holmes (FCS Def POY), new guy to be better than Kidder (1st team all BSC) and three new LBs to better than Kose 3rd team, Gamboa 1st team, and Van Ack 2nd team.
Sorry I disagree with you greatly. You claimed they were one of the best run defenses in the nation as they ranked at 38th. That is not a good ranking IMO. It's definitely not a ranking where you'd claim it's one of the best in the nation. You got to be top 10 to stake that claim IMO. You also don't think the D can improve much because of some individual player stats for tackles and sacks. I also disagree with that assessment. Some improved D like play, a guy like Davidson being a Takai like run stuffer in the middle, and varied schemes and blitz packages by our new DC could make this defense better.....much better.
You want to see a good defense. Look no further than NDSU. It's why they won 5 in a row and have a very legit shot at 6. They are always top 5 in nation for main defensive stats (scoring, ypg, etc)
38th does indicate that we have an inability to stop the run. 2nd in the league does indicate that either.
Only three teams were over their average in yards per carry against us and two of them did it by 0.1 and 0.2 yards. The only team that we showed an inability to stop the run was PSU, which ran for 6.5 compared against us to 5.0 on the year. So we held 9 of the 12 teams below their season average. I would think it would be the opposite 3 of 12, if we truly had an inability to stop the run.
NDSU averaged 5.0, got 5.1 in first game
Liberty averaged 3.6, got 2.0 vs. UM
Poly averaged 5.5, got 4.3
NAU avg'd 4.0, got 1.7
UC-Davis avg'd 3.5, got 2.7
PSU avg'd 5.0, got 6.5
UND avg'd 5.1, got 5.3
WSU avg'd 4.3, got 4.1
ISU avg'd 3.8, got 3.0
EWU avg'd 3.8, got 2.4
MSU avg'd 5.2, got 5.1
SDSU avg'd 3.7, got 2.9
NDSU avg'd 5.0, got 4.5
If you want to look for improvement, why not look in an area where there's lots of room for improvement? The offense was 8th in scoring, 9th in total offense, 11th in rushing offense, 11th in passing. Defense was 4th, 2nd, 2nd and 3rd. If the offense can move up 3-4 spots in each of those and the defense can stay within 1-2 spots of what it was last year, we get better.
