how they looking? mcgillis, stewart, selvig, hurley? any reports? has selvig beefed up? is hurley a legit 1-a player? is mcgillis as good as advertised? can these guys turn it around for us next year?

City if I lived in Missoula I would definitely know for you, but here is what I know so far.

Selvig has gotten alot bigger, especially in the upperbody. I am guessing he should be near 215 lbs. Then again, I seen him in warmups, but he actuallly looked more like a 1A post player than when I seen him over the summer. He looks thicker than Vanderjagt. His shot looks very smooth yet inconsistent. I believe he will be more than ready next year.

Hurley, over the summer he was lifting alot and getting solid. He definitely looked very trim to me as of a few weeks ago compared to this summer. Offensively I have heared from a few he is 1A, defense is a huge ? still. Word is he has been trying very hard though and his attitude is right. He is driven to prove the naysayers wrong, and bleeds maroon and silver. :thumb:

McGillis is certainly the athletic 3 we need especially defensively. I watched him play quite often this summer. He and Hasquet work very well together and both take huge pride being from Montana. Defensively he will definitely be our best perimeter defender. His outside shot looked smooth yet inconsistent. He took the ball to the hole without fear and can make things happen in the air. His ballhandling is BSC 2 guard capable and above average as a 3. I expect his toughness, pride, defense, and leadership to be huge next year. He and Hasquet work well together on both ends of the court.

Taylor also will bring much needed perimeter defense, ball handling, and penetrating. He is definitely a team player, capable of doing anything he is asked of. He is a player that does all the little things well and capable of taking over a game. His perimeter shot to me appeared average. If he develops more consistency he will be a huge asset for the GRIZ. He is very versatile and can see time at 1, 2, or 3. I compare him favorably to Stucci with better ballhandling abilities. I expect him to be the perfect 6th man due to his versatility and well rounded game.

McGillis, Taylor, and Selvig will definitely contribute next year and be part of a very good 10 man rotation. They bring to the GRIZ what we need this year in the 2 and 3 positions, toughness, and leadership. It will be interesting to see where the GRIZ play Selvig. He has great instincts and very capable of contributing in all aspects. My biggest concern for him right now is if he is ready to accept being a do it all big man or if it would be better to give him specific rolls 1st then expand the roles as he learns 1 at a time. Also not sure how tough he is. At least he looks tougher now. :thumb:

I hope someone closer to the team can chime in being I cannot watch practices like I did when in Missoula. I have only seen a few games and a few practices this year. Thanks to being in Denver now.

Here is a question for you. Does Stockton redshirt? If he is a lights out true point guard, he could be a difference maker. I would like to see him redshirt as CET has grown into that position and I would hope that Rundles comes back with a vengence next year.

I am pretty sure Ward and Stockton redshirt. I agree, Rundles will be back with a vengeance. However, we will not have to wait for next season. I will not be surprised if that vengeance comes to the forefront in the BSC tourney. Okay, I admit I am back on the Rundles bandwagon. :thumb:

This is going to be a tall team next year with 3 guys at or over 7 feet! Add in Hasquet, Sharp, McGillis, & Hurley all at or over 6'6".

I have a minor update on the redshirts. Being I had 5 of the next 6 days off work, I was rewarded another day off. I was wondering what the hell do with time off. Insanely enough I packed up the car after work and drove in from Denver for the games this weekend. Anyway, I stopped by Dahlberg and heared basketballs being dribbled. Out of curiosity, I checked out who was playing. Ironically enough Taylor, McGillis, and Hurley were playing 3 on 3 with Hayes and 2 others. I only watched for 30 minutes but seen some good things.

My assessment of McGillis has officially gone up a few more notches. He has a mean streak, plays nasty defense, outside shot looked very good, and penetrates with tenacity. Hayes and Hurley were guarding him and vice versa. Granted, he was not on fire, but offensively he did it all with ease, outside j's when playing off him, took the ball to hole hard when playing tight on him, and nasty power dunks in the lane contested. (Dlouhy with more power and attitude). His defense was every bit as impressive. He has strong and quick hands and easily ripped the ball out everyones hands and very clean too. He has great hops to help on rebounding too, and he is very strong and well built.

Hurley was not lacking in confidence offensively and even created some space well. He has added some ball handling to his game, and has very nice looking perimeter shot, but needs consistency. He is not real stong yet, but much trimmer and quicker than he was this past summer. Physically though McGillis owned him, then again after seeing McGillis he may be the stongest athletic 6'4" to 6'5" wing the GRIZ have had in some time. Hurley is not weak, but McGillis is that strong.

Taylor has a nice overall game and good handles. He is not blazing quick but certain above average at the BSC level for a 6'4" guy. On the ball he was solid, and got to perimeter shooter. He helped out well on defense and is lanky. I see him playing mostly 1 and 2, maybe some 3, but a stronger 3 can cause some problems for him. From the little I seen today, he appears to have very good instincts and more of PG than SG, very similar Roger Fastings. The few perimeter shots he shot looked smooth, and also has a nice little fadeaway from inside 12 feet.

I think the GRIZ did well in getting all 3. I am not saying Hurley will be a star or even started any time soon. He will though surprise many doubters and will contribute more than most here expect him to. :thumb:

Thanks! With Taylor, CET and Rundles, it would be a real waste, it seems, to not redshirt Stockton.

If Stockton or Ward do not redshirt, either would have to be DAMN good. Providing everyone stays, next years GRIZ will be the deepest ever without any position weakness. The only ? I see for next year is "Can the GRIZ replace what Strait brings to the table in terms of conistent inside scoring?" Qvale, Vanderjagt, and Selvig will have to improve drastically offensively to even begin replacing Strait. Then again I have a feeling McGillis will be tough inside if they post him up now and then on a SG or SF.

I have no doubts though that the GRIZ defense will be much better with the additions of Selvig, Taylor, and McGillis. Dare I expect defense to be a staple the next 2 to 3 years. :thumb:

I'd expect to Jordan playing mostly at the 4. We should be good at the post.

Stockton was voted Mr. Basketball in the State of Washington (by the Coaches). I'd say that qualifies as "DAMN good". Having seen him play, he's EXACTLY what the Griz need. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say he'd be starting this year (if he was there).

WOW, and congrats to Stockton, as well as Ward for very good Sr years. Most times a player with those kind of accolades would/could start here. After watching CET develop this year, and Rundles getting his game back, it is hard for me to think a Freshman would be better than either.

I guess the guard rotation could go something like this with Stockton.

PG- CET, Stockton, Rundles, Taylor (pick your poison/starter)
SG- Staudacher (definitely a true SG), Rundles, Taylor, Graves, Spurgetis.
SF- McGillis, Taylor, Hurley, Ward (should redshirt). Can Hasquet, Sharp, or Selvig play here if need be? Selvig and Hasquet have the characteristics to do it. Though with McGillis and Taylor, I see very little reason for either to see much time at the 3.

If Stockton does not redshirt, it will be dependent on Taylor's and Rundles willingness to play more 2, and in Taylor's case, some 3. I see Rundles more of a 2 than 1 anyway. Taylor is a player that can be an asset regardless of position. He has great basketball savy and is very unselfish.

As for Stockton, I think the GRIZ are in position at PG to redshirt him and groom him to start as soon as CET graduates. I have no doubts he will very good for the GRIZ, but think the program and he would benefit with him redshirting his freshman year.
