redshirts, puh-lease!

back in the late summer of 2001 i had chance to chat briefly with mike breske, then our football defensive coordinator. we'd come off a great recruiting year and i was wondering how many of the incoming defensive studs--johnny varona and blake horgan among others--would be playing as freshmen that year. "none of 'em," said breske, curtly. "don't need any of 'em." of course, all we did that year was win our second national championship. true to his word, not a single true freshman played on the defensive side of the ball that year.

flash forward to basketball 2008. we're coming off what appears to be a stellar class of freshmen recruits--stockton, digs, ward--and the temptation is to ask once again, "how many of them will play as true freshmen?" here's hoping tinks's answer is the same as breske's: "none of 'em!"

two reasons.

first, assuming everybody returns, we go eleven deep with hurley still a walk on, and we're two deep at every position, assuming taylor can play the point. i question whether we really need more help this year.

but, second, even assuming one of the three recruits is able to step in and play better than somebody else, is that additional talent going to be significant to the overall improvement of the team? and will not this year's recruit be that much better in four years?

i really like tinks's recruits, and i like that he's brought the player talent back to the level where we can put a championship team on the floor while saving our freshmen for the future. please, please, please--not another heidelberger-swift-qvale debacle. i'll be lurking.

With the way Tinkle signed JC's this spring it looks very possible that all three Freshman will redshirt next year, and leave a 10 player active rotation (plus walk-ons)

digs: (I am too lazy to look up the correct spelling) He has played power forward almost his entire basketball career. Both he and Tinkle want to try to move him to small forward, that will take an adjustment period. Chance to redshirt 95%.

Stockton: He is a true point guard, who has played at an extremely high level of competition in highschool, but will enter next season as third on the depth chart, behind the Taylor Brothers. I really think he will need some time to adjust to the speed of the D-1 game so he would benefit greatly from a redshirt year. If anything , though, were to happen to either Taylor, look for him to play major minutes. Chance to redshirt 66%.

Ward: Your best high school recruit. A number of Pac-10 schools would love to have him. Still though I think he would have to move ahead of Selvig, Sharp, Qvale, or Hasquet to avoid a redshirt. Chance to redshirt 51%.

If there are any injuries, or defections then one or more of these guy's will almost certainly be pressed into action

They will make their decesions once practice starts no need to get overly judgmental on these players yet.

I am curious, is that the acid reflux you get after eating at the Adams Center concession?

Appreciate your comments Mslacat, but I will go with Stockton as the best recruit. I have seen him and Ward a few times each and they are both talented, but Stockton just has that leadership quality that influences the others into greatness.

stockton may or may not be our best recruit but he's the one i'm most curious about. i just don't see how a kid is the mvp of the state of washington 4-a championship game (albeit junior year) while scoring 20-something against two blue-chip guards, only to get offers from big sky schools. my own theory is, if a kid can compete at the level stockton did in high school, he can do the same at the collegiate level--that is, after a redshirt year, of course.

i think the greatest failing of recruiters and professional talent hunters is their failure to judge intangibles.
