redshirt policy

One, let's get off the coaching staff, regarding Qvale's freshman year. Granted, I too would have loved to see him as SR RS this year, and he would be the rebounder, and shotblocker, we are missing. Honestly though, his FR year, we were very thin at Center, and PF. No offense to Kyle Sharp, but he played out of position at Center, and some PF his SR year. Qvale was also ready physically, as for strength. The right decision was made with Qvale.

Another thing to consider, and a few college coaches have told me. It is much easier to sell a post player on redshirting, all it takes is a few open gyms, then practices for them to see how much more physical college ball is in the paint than at the HS level. Many freshman posts get beaten up physically, and common sense more easily prevails, with the redshirt decision.

Perimeter players, especially PG and SG, are used to being the MAN in HS for 2 to 3 years. They are used to being asked to score, distribute, and make teammates better. Most them can hang with upper classmen, in terms of shooting, ball handling, defense, and quickness. It is more of a mental separation between youth, and experience with the perimeter players. This is the aspect where many Freshman feel they are ready, and find out they are not, but usually after the Redshirt is burned.

Tinkle commented quite frequently, how Cherry, and Jamar were well ahead of your average Freshman emotionally, and more mature than their age. Take those kind of statements to heart, when a coach says them, even more so with Tinkle. He is about as honest a coach as there is.

Seriously, physically there is not a huge difference between Henderson, and Jamar. Jamar is stronger, more versatile. Henderson is more athletic, and quicker. Cherry , and Deshields, again not a lot of difference physically, and both are great defenders. Deshields as FR is ahead of Cherry as for his shot, but that is it. Cherry has believed from day 1, he is the best guard on the court, no matter who the opponent is. Cherry has the "IT" factor. Gregory is a solid ball handler, good defender, and shooter too, but just has not developed his game enough to see the minutes.

Deshields, Gregory, and Henderson are more of your typical Freshman players. All are talented with tons of potential, and high ceilings. Meanwhile Cherry, and Jamar are the exceptions to your typical Freshman. They were not only ready physically, but mentally too. These other guys need to get there mentally, and continue to work on their games. No knock on any of them, but just the way NCAA basketball is now, and has been for years.

Also, keep an eye on Weisner, he next to never makes a mistake, and mentally just gets it. That is what a FR RS year is supposed to do for a player. Look for him, and Henderson to split the SF minutes next season. I will not be surprised if Weisner is incorporated more into the offense, even this season. This kid is a steal for the GRIZ.

Good post grizrule. I have to disagree with you about Weisner over Henderson though. Weisner is nearing his peak while Henderson is no where near his. Put another year on them and I don't see any way Weisner plays over him come next season. I think Gregory's ceiling is much higher also and with Jamar being able to swing over to the 3 with ease, you then could put Jordan at the 2 so Weisner basically has to beat out both Henderson and Gregory for time at the wing.
Also, I would say it is almost assured that Tinkle will sign a JC wing player to bring in more experience at that spot. I doubt he will want to have only the young guys to try and plug in when Steward leaves. Which is yet more competition. Then throw in that kid from Newport we signed, who to me looks similar to Weisner.
When you add it all up I think he is in a real dog fight.

Temp, did not mean to sound like I thought Weisner, would/should get more time than Henderson. I love them both. As for SF minutes, when I posted they should split the minutes next year, I meant they should be the primary 2 guys, with Jamar getting some swing minutes there too, and even Weisner swinging to the 4, as he does now. There are 40 minutes to distribute at SF, at worse, I hope it is a 25/15 split.

It is too early too tell who has the higher ceiling, but I do believe each of these young guys have higher ceilings than past GRIZ classes. That high ceiling is exactly why it would have made sense if the GRIZ would/could have redshirted any combination of Henderson, DeShields, and Gregory.

IF, the GRIZ bring in another SF, then it certainly changes what I think, based entirely on the known commodities we have coming back. Personally, I would rather see the GRIZ find another big for the 4/5 spots, that can REBOUND, and block shots. I really like our returning players we have at 1,2, and 3. Unless there is a TRUE sure fire player at either of these spots, I don't want to see any other wing players. The cupboard is pretty full the next few years at the wings. Keep in mind the kid from Whitefish is waiting in the wings too. I have heard good things about him as well. :thumb:

Sounds like we have the same thoughts, I was just wanting to pump the brakes a bit on Weisner.
I am with you on needing a big from the JuCo ranks. Seems like we will need help more on the block next year than out on the perimeter. We do still have 2 scholarships left for next year (been rumored on here that Emerson was promised one, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't over sign again)(he is from Columbia Falls too BTW not Whitefish)...anyways, that is why I am thinking one of those spots will be a 2/3 type.

On the recruiting front I have heard that the Griz are on the short list of 6-5 (205lb) sf Asaad Woods Mesa JC in AZ he is currently leading Mesa w/ a 13pts 4rbs averages while shooting 48% field goal, 34% 3pt range (48 attempts). He signed and played his freshman year at Liberty University (2010-11 season), but did not feel liberty was a good fit for him and dropped down to the local JC this year. He compares I believe to Stewart, and athletic physical player. Probably a little better shooter, but not as good rebounder.

tonight, st. mary's beat byu in provo by 12, in a game they led by 23 in the second half. this is the same st. mary's that montana used to play in an echoing empty gym in moraga years ago. a program that was roughly at the same level as montana--a middle-of-the pack mid-major. now they're ranked 20th in the country, and likely to go higher after tonight's game. two major keys to their success.

first, they went out and got some real good australian kids. the latest, dellavedova, is the star of this year's team. krysko tried, but st. mary's succeeded.

but, second, they've followed a policy that i've been advocating for montana, which is to have more experienced players to compete against the bigger programs. they've done it this way: five players on the team had redshirt years, and four more are transfers who had to sit out a year. thus you have nine players on this year's team who have one more year of maturity and experience than their class designation suggests.

actually, i can't say montana is that far behind. we have four current players who have redshirted--selvig, reader, weisner and hutchison. our transfers came from jaycee programs, while the st. mary's transfers came from other d1 schools and had to sit out a year. still, i'd feel better if gregory and henderson had reshirted. it's the sane way to compete against the bigger programs. it's a policy worth implementing as fully as possible.
