i don't for one second question the heart of this year's team, or any tinks-coached team. players are generally effusive in their praise of his character, passion for the game and the family-like atmosphere he creates. i heartily agree.

odd thing is, tinks right now is getting beat at his strength--recruiting. among the gems he's recruited the past few years--selvig, qvale, cherry, jamar, dunn, gregory, gfeller--are a growing list of duds--reader, kovacevic, wiley, hutchison, kemp. this is indeed odd, since all these are big men, where tinks and his staff should have the greatest edge because of tinks's background as a player.

meantime, not only has weber established a solid pipeline to texas--bolomboy, gittens, senglin and hill, all talented underclassmen--damien lillard is becoming a poster boy for the weber program. on top of which they just recruited a three-star big from colorado.

in a weak conference where second and third just doesn't cut it, i only hope the kid from glendive can play, and that tinks and the staff have their eye on some other jumbo talent. it can't get here too quickly.

I agree it's odd that Tinks hasn't been able to recruit a serviceable big man. The thing with BB recruiting at UM's is that if you miss judge on, say, 2 centers in a row, it hurts you for 4 to six years. We simply can't recruit the types of players that are ready to go as true freshman like the big programs.

Couple that with the fact that no one wants to play as a true post anymore -- watch any school yard hoops game -- and you've got your problem.

I think the rebounding problem is a little deeper than just recruiting a good big man. I do believe Larry would have made a decent rebounder and scorer out of Hutchinson, as he played the part, and knows the small things that make a successful rebounder. One of the old successful coaches at the UofM always stated that a decent big man should average at least 10 points a game, just by put backs. Wayne is a big man, but really never played a true big man position, and so I doubt he'd be as good a coach in that regard, than someone who was in the trenches. I think we also lost a huge coaching resource when Bill Evans left, and doesn't look like we replaced him with like talent. One person's opinion....

Do not forget Martin Breunig. A close friend of Tinks told me Wayne thinks Martin has the potential to be a 2-time Big Sky MVP.

I wouldn't be so quick to say Weber is recruiting better. Over the past four years, we are 8-4 against them. Efficiency ratings between Montana and Weber season to season have been pretty equal.

Yes, Lillard was an amazing get, but he could never get it done against the talented Cherry/Jamar/Ward.

This season Weber is looking a lot better than us, but it's just one season and we could easily feel stocked full of talent next year once Breunig suites up.

Tinks has indeed recruited a more than servicable big man. But Bruenig has to sit a year because of transfer rules. Such as life when you get a drop down. Would have been nice to have him and Kareem together.

And people wonder why coaches in sports other than FB hate the FCS/I-AA moniker.
