Recruiting update Thread

I agree the kid has earned it as has Wood, that's why Tinkle is going to hold the hand I think.
That Jagne list is excellent and I've often thought you have to have your name out their with the big boys to even have a chance. I gotta get back to work before I fire myself.

The Griz were recruiting Antonio Worthy a 6-11 260 to 280 (maybe even 300) pound center out of California. Worthy I beleive has had some weight problems this year which has hurt his recruitment. I believe he will be going JC this next year.

Woods redshirted this year at Santa Anna JC this past year in order to get his grades in order. If all went well expect him to play his sophomore year in 2011-12 for Santa Anna and then move on to the DS-1 level. Montana is very much in the mix for his services.

If I remember correctly, the spring signing period ended yesterday. Not sure how that works for transfers, maybe they can run longer. But, with having not heard anything on any other recruits I would guess we are done for the year.

Yesterday was the last day of the official signing period and as such the last day an athlete can sign an official Letter of Intent. After this date an athlete will sign what is referred to as a Grant in Aid Letter/contract. The main difference is that a GIA locks the school into providing a scholarship for the athlete given he meet the requirement out lined in the GIA, but if the athlete changes his/her mind they can back out of the GIA at anytime up until they enroll in classes. With a LOI if an athlete backs out they must receive a release from the school and could possibly have to sit out the following year as a redshirt.

All schools can still sign player up until the school starts.

I did not know that. That is interesting stuff. I was thinking after I wrote that, that when we signed Adams it was late in the summer and I was wondering how that worked. Cool, thanks again for the scoop!

There is the possibility of one current player giving up his schollie for next year( but walking on) and using it for Arop.
Wonder if Uncle John could help out here. :thumb:

Why would Uncle John do that? Then again, maybe he can be as convincing as Papa Joe was to have his kid to play without a scholarship. I surely believe John's nephew sure has earned that Scholarship though. Who knows, but it is nice to have something to chat about.

By the way, Check out the list of offers Jagne has already. It would be a huge get if Tinkle pulls this kid out of his hat. With those offers, why isn't he rated higher?

Uncle John didn't even pay for his own son to walk-on to the football team, so I'm pretty sure he wouldn't pay for his nephew.

After checking ESPN, Scout, and Rivals, this is all I came up with for 2012. Mader the only one with height, Jagne is big though.

Sorry the link does not take you to the page I got this from, just the site.

Scout lists Jagne as being a 3-star DE recruit, with an offer; by Montana for football.

How does VA and Chase leaving affect the Montana APR? I'm not clear on how transfers work but I assume they count against you? Is there any threat of losing a scholarship if more players leave the program? Thanks to anyone who knows how this works.

My understanding is that a transfer only really hurts the APR if the person does not graduate. So as long as the person graduates, no matter which school, then it is not much of an issue.

This kid fires me up. I ilke this signing a lot! Way to go Tinkle. :

(from article link posted above)

Last week DeShields – who’s finishing up a post-grad year at Vermont Academy – finally realized that dream by committing to Montana.

“Man, it feels good,” said DeShields, who also considered Longwood. “It’s been a long journey, for real. It was a long journey, but it feels really good. I feel proud to be a part of Grizzly Nation.”

This summer, DeShields will make the nearly 2,300-mile trek from Baltimore to Missoula, leaving his hometown behind for the promise of something new. His past – both the painful memories and the positive experiences in Baltimore – only serve as motivation.

“It was a journey where I thought I wasn’t going to reach it,” DeShields said. “There was a time I would hold my head down [and think] ‘Man, I’m probably never going to get my goal.’ But I never stopped working. My friend, my brother, John Crowder, that was my man. He can’t be here, so I’m putting the work in. Whenever I think about him, I think about my family, my mother, everybody. No matter what, I can’t give up. I can’t.”

(another quote from a link posted above):

Keron Deshields is a winner,” Bopp said. “He is one of the most competitive kids that I’ve ever been around.”

Why do you insist on posting that Selvig is being counted on the play the post, when he is NOT? Billy Reader is going to turn some heads, and Tinkle is not done recruiting better players. Tinkle gets that more than any coach at UM in recent history. If the recruits don't get better after a couple years in the program, a good coach will cut them loose by helping them go somewhere they can compete. We have had far too many guys over the years who did not belong in D1.

Good post.
