Records Broke in ‘21

Sadly the season is prematurely over but there was definitely some exciting moments this year that resulted in broken records. Malik Flowers, Brian Buschini, and Kevin Macias all single handedly rewrote some impressive special teams records while Jr CB Justin Ford tied an FCS record this year and Sammy Akem tied a Griz record.

Consecutive games with an INT
8 Justin Ford ‘21(FCS record tied).

Louisville transfer Justin Ford tied an FCS record for consecutive games with an INT with 8, finally breaking the streak vs MSU where he returned a fumble for his 3rd defensive TD of the season. The mans just always in the right place at the right time.

FG% Career(min 25 att)
1st 85.2 Kevin Macias ‘21
2nd 82.4 Brandon Purdy ‘16-‘17, ‘19

Kevin Macias broke Brandon Purdy’s career FG% record after starting the year 4 of 8. He then went on to nail 19 consecutive FG’s, also a team record, including two from 50+, to break the two year old record.

Kick Return TD’s Season
1st 2 Malik Flowers ‘21
Kick Return TD’s Career
1st 5 Malik Flowers ‘18-‘22(ties BSC record)

It’s amazing to think we’ll still have one more season of Flowers back there returning kicks. With two KR’s for TD’s this year and five in his first three years here, he’s been electric to watch, that is if they kick to him. It was nice to see Bobby find a way to get him some KR’s in the JMU game finally. Hopefully we can build on that next year when every team in the league will most certainly be kicking away from the greatest KRer in Montana history.

Punt Avg Season(min 25 att)
1st 46.00 Brian Buschini ‘21
2nd 44.69 Mike Rice ‘85
Punt Avg Career(min 50 att)
1st 45.79 Brian Buschini ‘20-‘21
2nd 42.56 Mike Rice ‘85-‘86

Brian “BOOM”chini will go down as the greatest punter in UM history, and possibly now the most hated, even if he only kicked through his Fr year. Beating the season mark by over a yard and shattering the career mark by over three, he’s going the path of Raul Allegre and transferring to the FBS after an amazing Fr campaign. Good luck to you Brian, once a Griz, always a Griz!

Receiving TDs Career
1st 29 Marc Mariani ‘06-‘09
1st 29 Sammy Akeem ‘17-‘21

Sammy came as the only Griz recruit to ever come out of Oklahoma, after only receiving one D1 offer and he did not disappoint. After his So year where he caught 13 TD’s, tied for the fifth most in school history, the career record of 29 defenetly appeared on the horizon. In fitting fashion he tied that record in his last home game, a domination of con foe EWU.

Farewell Seniors
Speaking of Sammy Akem and fellow Sr Jace Lewis, they finish their Griz careers amongst the elite in Montana’s storied history. Two of the greats to play the game, their career numbers definitely reflect that.

Sammy will go down as the only receiver to finish his career in UM’s top 5 in receptions, yards, and TD’s. After tying the school TD record, he finished 3rd in receptions and 4th in yards. An amazing playmaker, his contributions will be greatly appreciated.
Receptions Career
1st 230 Jerry Louis-McGee ‘16-‘19
2nd 192 Raul Pacheco ‘95-‘98
3rd 191 Sammy Akeem ‘17-‘21
Receiving Yards Career
1st 3,021 Jamaal Jones ‘13-‘15
2nd 3,018 Marc Mariani ‘06-‘09
3rd 2,733 Matt Wells ‘92-‘95
4th 2,711 Sammy Akeem ‘17-‘21

Jace Lewis is in a long line of great Griz LB’s but he etched his name as one of the best of that group. Jace wrapped up his career finishing 9th in tackles and tackles for loss. Considering he played along side the career leaders in tackles last year and the future career leader in tackles these last two years, I’d say that’s pretty impressive.
Tackles Career(since 1976)
9th 319 Jace Lewis ‘17-‘21
Tackles for Loss Career(since 1976)
9th 36.5 Jace Lewis ‘17-‘21

Next in Line
I know we’ve already talked some of Malik Flowers and Justin Ford with records they’ve set but their time here, and records they may collect, are not done. Those two Sr’s to be along with Patrick O’Connell and Robby Hauck will definitely be making some major waves next year in the record books.

Malik Flowers finished this year with the 2nd highest season mark in KR avg and will be looking to better that next year while adding to his current career numbers which has him sitting atop the leader board right now. At his current rate, he should also break Rob Schulte’s 15 year old career KR yards record after his 3rd or 4th KR of the season.
Kick Return Avg Season
1st 33.5 Greg Anderson ‘74
2nd 30.5 Malik Flowers ‘21
Kick Return Avg Career(min 35 att)
1st 28.39 Malik Flowers ‘18-‘22
2nd 27.57 Mark Mariani ‘06-‘09
Kick Returns Yards Career
1st 2129 Rob Schulte ‘05-‘08
2nd 2044 Malik Flowers ‘18-‘22

Justin Ford just finished the greatest season in UM history for a CB, recording 9 INT’s, the most ever by a corner. He finished 3rd on UM’s single season mark behind Safties Karl Stein and Mick Dennehy. Next year he will have the opportunity, albeit an extremely tuff task of breaking Karl Stein’s 53 year old career record of 20, which he did in two seasons, the 2nd of which he set a still standing con record with 11.
Interceptions Season
1st 11 Karl Stein ‘69(BSC Record)
2nd 10 Mick Dennehy
3rd 9 Karl Stein ‘68, Justin Ford ‘21
Interceptions Career(since 1968)
1st 20 Karl Stein ‘69-‘70
2nd 16 Mick Dennehy ‘69, ‘71-‘72
3rd 15 Tim Hauck ‘87-‘89
18th 9 Justin Ford ‘20-‘22

Robbie Hauck should very quickly supplant Dante as the all time tackler and then go on to set a standard that may never be reached here and is on pace to break Kane Ioane’s nearly 20 year old con record of 471.
Tackles Career(since 1976)
1st 397 Dante Olsen ‘16-‘19
2nd 393 Vince Huntsberger ‘98-‘01
3rd 364 Robby Hauck ‘18-‘22

Oh if only we would’ve had Patrick O’Connell as a Fr, the career sacks and tackles for loss records would without a doubt be his. As is, he still may reach the tackles for loss record and sacks is certainly doable. At the very least, a top three finish in both is nearly certain.
Sacks Career(since 1976)
1st 38.5 Zack Wagenmann ‘11-‘14
2nd 34.5 Tyrone Holems ‘12-‘15
3rd 32.5 Tim Bush ‘00-‘03
10th 20.5 Patrick O’Connell ‘19-‘22
Tackles for Loss Career(since 1976)
1st 53 Zack Wagenmann ‘11-‘14
2nd 49.5 Tyrone Holems ‘12-‘15
3rd 48.5 Tim Bush ‘00-‘03
11th 31.5 Patrick O’Connell ‘19-‘22

I wonder how many more receptions, yards and TDS Sammy would have added had he not missed several games at the end of the 2019 season? Just another what if I know.

Great post, terrific research, Thanks for all your input.

Why would anyone hate Brian Buschini for bettering his situation. He was at UM as a walkon and left for a full ride to a Big 10 school.

If you're going to hate on a college age kid for making that decision, a smart decision, you need to reevaluate what is important in life.

I don't hate the kid. Good for him....but it's more the WAY he left, and the WAY he communicated his decision that has some folks upset.
