Rebounding

We are quite literally the worst rebounding team in the Nation. By a two rebound avg per game. 351st  Love the Griz but this is pathetic.

I honestly don't see it getting any better this year. With the losses of Reader and Marko Kovacevic we have zero inside presence. Hopefully Tinks can work his recruiting magic with a couple more bigs. Kemp and Martin have been HUGE letdowns in the paint up to this point in the season, lets hope they start to make some major strides as we roll into league.

We're only tied for worst if you sort by offensive rebounds per game!

Seriously though, these numbers will improve once we get into the Big Sky. We had the same issues last year with rebounding where we got absolutely destroyed on the boards in most of our non-conference games. Once conference rolled around we ended up +0.2 for average rebounding margin in conference only games.

I wouldn't say Kemp has been a huge letdown either. Just inconsistent so far (like most JC players are initially). Per minute he's by far the best rebounder on the team. Per 40 minutes he's at about 8.6 rebounds and 11.4 points. He just needs more time in there and to shore up some things defensively then I'm sure he'll start to get more minutes to prove what he can do.

I know we are out manned inside and I'm not one to call out individual guys. The rebounding HAS to get better though. Dead last in the country is completely unacceptable. Rebounding for the most part is 90% effort. Not saying our guys don't play hard, but you have to pick it up on the glass. That is bullshit and I'm sure Tinks is saying the same thing.

Rebounding isn't about height, it's hustle. Height doesn't hurt, but if Vassy Banney can be a rebounding machine for us, I don't see why Kemp can't be, either. These guys just need to get a body on someone and want it more than the other team.

The best pound for pound rebounder in the conference is not even 6'5" and plays for UNC. That is the guy that proves height is not an issue. Also anyone remember Hornung from Colorado State the last few seasons? That guy was a rebounding clinic at 6'4". I think part of the problem is, the GRIZ are 100% committed to transition defense, and don't pound the glass much offensively. So it is pretty easy to keep our guys off the boards.

Thank you. Rouge you are right on. Rebounding is about effort and choosing to be an ass-kicker and not a victim of your height.

Mtgrizrule you are one of the best basketball poster on this board and you are right and "get it" about just about everything you say regarding hoops. I have probably called you out on some of your opinions about football on here but you know your stuff on bball (which im trying to stop being such a jackass) Keep It up.

I am passionate about basketball and football. Problem with football is, too damn many players to watch and too much field to see it all. Basketball is much easier to learn the nuances and strategies. Football, takes longer to get a feel of a team too, and almost impossible to get a feel from online. Basketball, even on a small screen watching a game, one can some of a feel. Speaking of feel, hate to see it, but those boys are missing some fire and passion early this season. Next game, I will be looking to see who is playing with tenacity, it had better start with Kareem. I know Jordan Gregory and Keron will be. For rebounding to improve we need every guy to have Gregory's attitude, passion, and desire. Then again, Gregory is my kind of player. Weisner, plays hard, but physically he just is not a true paint player. He is a true SF/3.

I know Hutchison and Martin work hard. Andy has a higher ceiling, still a little tentative. With that said, he is an afterthought on the court with fellow players. It is disappointing too. They need to get him the ball when he has position. He also can hit the 10 to 15 jump shot. He has a nice soft touch. Maybe he is too raw still to have earned that faith from the team. Hutchison, for as strong as he is, his rebounding numbers should be much better. The one post player the players do look for is Kemp. That is a good sign for the team. However, the perplexing part is, what is keeping him from the floor with more minutes? I honestly see a 10 point to 7 rebound per game talent there, at worse.

One way or the other, the team needs to commit to our post players and develop them. I know this is hard to do in basketball, but have seen it done on a few teams. Until one or 2 guys separate themselves in the post, situation substitute as often as possible. Martin defensively, his length always makes the defense better. I think with more minutes and know how he can help on the boards too. He needs minutes for confidence. Hutchison, is either good or bad so far this season.

If these guys do not develop inside, I see no reason why this team cannot go with more pressure defense and traps. Wayne has a lot of tough decisions to still make.

When you hang your hat on a guy like Hutcheson, who wouldn't be all conference in the Frontier conference, and a soft 7' bean pole, you aren't gonna be a force on the boards. Tinks should have hit the JC ranks or gone overseas for a legit big man. he has a shitload of guards, but the middle is terrible. The UW transfer will help... NEXT SEASON

Pretty obvious this year, sure we are a bit 'undersized' but as others note we could better position ourselves, hustle!,

This does not look good unless we avg. 60% or better from the floor shooting

In all fairness to Tinkle he never planned on losing Wiley who would be a force in the paint. Last year people were high on Martin. This year not so much as he hasn't shown much improvement so far and maybe that is why his minutes are down. We lost a lot of talent last year and with the loss of Wiley we are not near as strong as we were last year. The year is still young and we will see what happens. It is always hard to remember it is not how you start but how you finish. I hope Kemp picks it up after Christmas as Junior College players usually do when January and February role around but the jury is still out there IMO. Living and dying by the 3 is not the answer. When you are hot you can beat anyone but when you are not it can make for a long season and to put 2 or 3 games together in a row to win a tournament is not very likely without a great defense and strong rebounding to offset a down shooting performance.

Judging from just one game, I would pick Idaho State over Montana unless the Griz begin to show some thing they just haven't shown this year. ISU looked pretty good tonight against Utah in SLC even in the loss. They had a good chance to win this game but were worn down by Utah. ISU's Hansen is pretty good and the other kid was a rebounding machine..I'm afraid it is going to be a bit of off year for the Griz. Utah looks much better than Washington.

PURE SPECULATION that Wiley would be a "force" in the paint. The reason he quit was he was buried on the depth chart, so not sure he was anywhere close to " a force". More like a farce when it comes to basketball, all hype, nothing tangible. Hopefully football will be more to his liking. No doubt he is athletic, but it sure wasn't going to happen for him in basketball.

Agreed. Rebounding is largely a mindset. Desire, react and box out, hustle, scrap, some knowledge in terms of where a shot is likely to end up. As stated, height, jumping ability, strength and quickness also help, but are not critical.

Montana is not going after the ball after a perimeter shot and seems to have decided to focus on preventing the fast break and that defensive mind set is not going to work as Washington proved. The Huskies are not a good team THIS YEAR, and were missing two of their starters but the missing inside game for UM gave them a win. From what I have seen so far, UM is going to be a middle of the conference team. Way too much focus on the perimeter shot and the one shot and hustle attempt before switching to Defense.
