Reasons to be Optimistic?

It looks to me that Hauck/Pease are starting to pivot the offense to focus on McDowell’s strengths. It’s a run-first QB approach that doesn’t mesh with what the staff wants to do with the offense.
STARTING TO PIVOT...in week six. Great. The synaptic response of a very large dinosaur who's tail has been on fire.

The reluctance to change concerns me too. I think it’s a decision they are only making because they have no other choice.

Ultimately I think Pease wants to run the same style offense he did at Boise State or Florida, but he has yet to comes to terms with the fact that he doesn’t have the athletes to do so at the FCS level.

I think that disconnect is why they gave Vidlak as many chances as they did. It wasn’t until NAU that they were forced to make a change.

If you think about it, it’s also how they’ve built the QB room. They recruited kids like Graves and the Rostad brothers who played running QB in high school. Coming in they were a lot like Dalton Sneed, who is by far the most successful QB in the BH2.0 era. But they convert those kids into safeties and linebackers and go with QBs like Vidlak, Brown, Huot, and Ah Yat who are better passing than running.

The only guy in the QB room similar to Sneed’s skill set is McDowell. It’s just a weird dynamic.

Could you imagine if they had embraced Garret Graves as a QB and developed him to be the next Dalton Sneed? Similar to how Bozeman has developed Mellott?

I’ve said it before…of ALL the HS Qb’s brought in by Bobby, the most amazing fact is that BROWN is the only one who’s remained a QB…it would appear Ah Yat has already passed Huot on the depth chart, so look for a position change or program change for Huot this off season.

My view is that they kept giving each QB chances until one emerged. McDowell emerged against ISU. My impression is that this is what the coaches envisioned with these 2 QB’s. I like that McDowell hasn’t thrown picks and can run. Wish he had Vidlak’s arm and accuracy. I believe McDowell will continue to improve. Vidlak is probably right in the mix too.

Here is a cool thing to be optimistic about: some speed on the back end. The Griz again faced a dangerous passing attack and had no vertical back breakers. There was a short pass and broken tackle but Lee ran down the player after a big chunk. From gogriz article
UC Davis went right to work with Miles Hastings, finding Lance Babb along the left sideline for a big 65-yard chunk play all the way down to the Grizzly 25-yard line before Jaxon Lee dragged him down.
Looked like the guy was gone but Lee caught him from behind. I heard Lee was one of the top three fastest on the team and I did not believe it until I saw that play

I've followed the Griz since the early 90s and right when Brent Pease first started out as Montana's OC and QB coach. I think the type of offense he wants to run is one that passes 70% and run 30%. In the 90s he had QBs who weren't the prototypical NFL QB which 6'4, 225lbs. They were 5'10-6ft and were smart QBS who could read defenses, make smart decisions but also throw on the run and avoid pressure.
But now Pease doesn't have the QB to run the type of offense he truly wants to which is why he's forced to adjust and tweak his offense to fit McDowells strengths. And they wanted Vidlak to run the offense because his ability to throw the ball, but his inability to avoid pressure and make plays on the run is why they went with McDowell. They gave Vidlak 3 starts and overall he couldn't perform at a high level. At times the o line was to blame for protection but even then, he still needs to be able to feel the pressure and make something happen instead of taking sacks a majority of the time. I mean I've never seen a QB have negative 100 yards rushing in only 3 games. That's not all on the o line. That's a QBs inability to make plays in difficult situations.
And i believe that right now at 3rd string is Ah Yat and he's obviously not a run first QB, but I'm pretty sure he's an athletic QB just like his dad was and I've heard from various sources that he's been balling it up against the Ds 1st stringers which is why they moved him up to 3rd string. Not to mention in recent years Hawaii has been producing some of the best college QBs . I hope nothing happens to McDowell. He's on a roll and I'd like to see him succeed. He's been waiting long time to get on the field and he finally got his chance. But if anything were to happen, I'd be excited to see what Ah Yat would bring to the table. And even his dad didn't play as a true freshman, so this kid must be talented.
The good thing is we have the players to run the ball when needed and the receivers to play the pass if needed also. Things are looking up and this Griz team are a bunch of scrapers and fighters and won't give up ever. They will fight to the end. Yeah we won't dominate teams, but will come together when it counts. They will peak at the right time. Go GRIZ!!!!!

70/30? It’s been more like 30/70…even with Vidlak behind center…

61.6% runs this season so far. So, just under 62/38

Idk if you guys actually read the whole post, but I was referring to when Pease first started as an OC and what he used to do. I wasn't talking about how they are now. But right now he's running an offense more geared towards the strengths of his personnel which is geared to more running then throwing.

After next week more will be optimistic and some will still just say idaho was over rated.and not that good.

Let's just wait and see. I can't be optimistic just yet.

Regarding the “dangerous” passing attack, Hastings had easily his best game of the year last week.

Before the UM game, he was averaging 62% completion rate and 5.6 yards per attempt. 1.2 TD’s per game and 1 INT per game.

Quite frankly, his performance against UM is reason for concern for the secondary.

Well, I’ve ALWAYS had concerns about the secondary, made even more so by the lack of pressure successfully getting to the QB…
