RB Swing Pass

In watching the game, the running back swing pass out of the backfield was open 100% of the time but Lucas never went there. I don’t think he went there once. Based on the scheme Idaho was running it was literally one on one coverage with the linebacker 15 yards away from the running back. That play would’ve hit for 10 to 15 yards every time. If I, an armchair quarterback at best, can pick up on that shit why the hell isn’t our experienced staff figuring that out.

Hell line Bergen up in the backfield and put him on that swing that linebacker isn’t going to tackle him and it will go for a lot of yards if not to the house.

80% of the time Johnson stares down 1 receiver and throws there. Rarely does he look at other options.

Not sure why they took the run game away from Lucas, it was very effective early when he was a dual threat. Also it didn’t seem like we tried to establish a run game at all against Idaho, even though they gave up 5 and 6 ypc against their early opponents. Malik gains 20 yards every time they use him in a fly sweep, including in this game, yet we don’t use it. We don’t hit the RB on the swing. We try ticky tacky trick plays instead of smash mouth football. We don’t covert 3rd and short or 4th and short well because we refuse to get under center and run power or qb sneak (although they finally did that this last game for a TD…finally!). Just seems like we’ve really struggled offensively for years against anyone with any semblance of a defense.

The best are 3rd and 8's when we throw a 2 yard pass to a covered receiver. Again and again.

Yes! Add that to the list. And I think Grossman is terribly underutilized in the pass game. Dude has great hands and can fly.

I wish Johnson would look at our RBs out of the backfield 4-5 times a game.

Most will remember how deadly Knight was two years ago catching those exact passes.

He survived pretty much that last season, when he was essentially the only RB option.

But got pretty beat up doing so... hence back at receiver. Agree he needs to be targeted more in the offense but 20 touches seems a bit much? He's in the same camp as Grossman and Roberts for me but it really comes down to the what the defense is doing and who/how they are defending our key weapons. Then again none of this matters if our QB can't the ball to them...

You’re dumb, he’s not back at wr because of that. He’s at WR because that’s what he is…not a RB. 20 obviously is an exaggeration. He should have multiple pass and run plays designed for him a game. That is the point

49 receptions for 650 yards and 7 TDs over a season and a half. I wouldn't call that terribly underutilized for a TE.

ONE target in the Idaho game. Bergen? TWO. Flowers? TWO.

Those are the three biggest game-breakers on the team, IMHO. SIX touches between them. That's not gonna get it done.

20 is not an exaggeration. 10-12 downfield catches, 5-6 WR screens, swing passes out of the backfield, and jets sweeps to get him in space on the edge.... and punt returns....gets you to 20 easily.

I’m talking currently as in this season. He’s got 12 catches for 176 through six games. He should have five catches per game at minimum.

As an OC you have to figure out how to get your best, and most explosive players the ball in ways they can do something with it. Flowers isn’t a great route runner, but I’m darn sure he can handle a bubble screen. Or a jet sweep. Grossman is a huge mismatch at the FCS level. Find a way to get him the ball! And Bergen is just plain good. He needs touches. I can understand that one player might be game planned for by the defense, but they can’t do 3-4…so figure it out coaches!

Idaho also had a very good receiver and a good TE. And they got open frequently.

It was impressive. And equally unimpressive was our ability to call route combos with lack of adjustments by our offensive staff and receivers to get position at or beyond the sticks.
