QVALE NAMED MID-MAJOR DEFENSIVE ALL-AMERICAN
BOSTON (MA) – University of Montana center Brian Qvale has yet another honor to add to his impressive senior resume, as he was recently named to the http://www.collegeinsider.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; 2011 Mid-Major Defensive All-American team.
Rather than selecting a first, second, third team and honorable mentions; collegeinsder.com’s Mid-Major Defensive All-America squad is just one team consisting of 21 players.
“I was just thrilled to hear about that,” said UM head coach Wayne Tinkle, who is 91-64 in five seasons at his alma mater. “Brian is a guy who has just put in so much time and effort, and he was a real force for us defensively. This is a very nice honor for a player and person who meant an awful lot to our program, and I couldn’t be more excited for him.
“He was also very efficient offensively, especially over the past couple of years where he was comfortable demanding the ball and getting results with it,” Tinkle said. “He really worked himself into becoming a well-rounded player, and that’s why he was invited to a tournament such as Portsmith, and we are going to see Brian’s playing days continue.”
Earlier this season, Qvale (pronounced quall-ee) , a 6-11, 260-pounder from Williston, N.D., was also selected to the 10-team All-District VIII team by the United States Basketball Writers Association. He was also tabbed the Big Sky Conference’s “Defensive Player of the Year” and was a unanimous all-league selection.
A four-year letterman at Montana, Qvale led the 21-11 Grizzlies in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots this past season, averaging 14.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game.
He finished second in the nation in field goal percentage (62.6%), was 13th in blocked shots per game (3.0), and 54th in rebounds per game (8.8).
Qvale’s 95 blocked shots this past season are a Big Sky single-season record, and he’s the all-time career shot blocker in conference history, with 247 rejections. His career field goal percentage of 58.9% (415-of-704) is the 13th best in league history.
His 721 career rebounds rank him eighth in school history, while he is tied for 21st in career scoring with 1,046 points.
