Well, the Nevada contingent has spoken.
And yes, I'd rather do away with tournaments and award the title to the league champ, Weber this yesr, Montana last. But since tournaments line the pockets of the league fat cats, we all understand they're not going away. Our argument has always been that in the case of one-bid leagues, you have to do all you can to protect your best team.
I'm glad Reno and the BSC are putting on a nice tournament. But hell, led not go too far overboard. After all, that's what they're being paid to do. I think there's more than enough ribbons being handed out to the undeserving without heaping praise on someone for doing their job.
EG, I know you can do better than keep repeating the "everybody gets a ribbon" mantra. You're starting to sound like Donald Trump and his, "Making America great again" blather.
Post-season tournaments are, by definition, NOT INTENDED to protect the high seeds. If that were the only concern, we'd send Weber State's men and Montana State's women to the Dance and call it good. But every conference in the nation has decided its wants to be a tiny bit relevant during March Madness which is about all that a lot of college basketball fans are resonating with these days. So they have tournaments. Even the one-bid leagues like the Patriot, where they are sending 14-19 Holy Cross to the Dance. They tried to make it very difficult for the Crusaders -- they had to win four TRUE road games in order to get there. Did it. Now what? They probably get a play-in game, which means all eyes will be on them that night. If they lose, hey they lose.
And what's this crap about the league "fat cats" getting anything out of this tournament? Believe me, guys like Ron Loghry and Jon Kasper would much rather let the Montana and Weber State athletic departments run these tournaments on short notice, then do all the organizing work that the conference offices now own for a neutral site tourney. They aren't getting anything out of this except a bunch of work. And the pride of a job well done.
I get that Montana and Weber fans hate the idea of not able to host the tourney, it had kind of become their birthright. Hell, the one year ISU hosted the women's tournament (2012) was great and having the tournament in Pocatello was a hoot. But you guys refuse to even acknowledge the value of having pre-determined travel for the teams and their families. You refuse to acknowledge that giving every team a chance to be included offers the opportunity for moments like Idaho State's buzzer beater over MSU (a No. 9 seed eliminating a 1) on Wednesday, which led Sports Center that afternoon and was named the top buzzer beater of March Madness so far on the USA Today web site. And you refuse to acknowledge that every other conference in America -- including all those one-bid leagues like the Big Sky -- think there is value in allowing every team in their league to compete.
