Quick CCU Breakdown (By CCU Fan)

Below is taken from their message board. Pretty decent breakdown and a good snapshot. A lot of what's said from this fan is very typical of a playoff team. They're offense is the best it's been in program history (granted, it's just over a decade old...correct?), they appear to be mentally tough, and their coach seems like he's the real deal. But, what jumps out at me is near the bottom. They take care of the ball and have only had twelve turnovers in thirteen games. The turnover battle is going to be key this coming weekend.

Quick snapshot:

Offense is the best we've ever had around here. We spread it out and run zone read. Currently 3rd in FCS scoring (43 ppg) and 10th in total offense (493 ypg). Set a conference record with six 50 point games, with nine games above 40 points. Alex Ross is our QB and he's a special one. 2,706 passing yards, 26 TDs, 7 picks but only one INT in the last six games (and that was against FBS S. Carolina and their best CB Vic Hampton). Only a soph. Our running game ranks 7th in FCS at 263 ypg and is led by Payton candidate Lorenzo Taliaferro (6-2, 230). He's second in FCS scoring with 24 rush TDs and 2 rec TDs, 10th in rush yards per game at 121 per. Great between the tackles with power but sneaky fast if he gets to the corner. Hop Henderson (541 yards) has speed to burn and will get carries as well.

Wideouts are deep, talented and experienced with Matt Hazel (58 rec, 8 TDs) being the best of that bunch. He made phenomenal one-handed TD catch vs. Cookman against double coverage. That highlight is on Youtube. Big play guy. O-line all Jrs and Srs, with three of them (LT Hamilton, LG Cheatwood, and RT Herring) 1st team All-conference. Good barometer for us is 200+ yards rushing. We are 55-5 in 11 seasons when we get to 200 on the ground.

Defensively, we'll give up yards and some points. But if you get us, it's usually in the first half because our staff does a really nice job of making adjustments at the break. 225 points allowed in the first half, 149 in the second. LB Quinn Backus (Jr, 5-10, 205) is our best defender. 126 tackles, 10 TFLs, 3 INT’s and two TD’s this season. Guy is in on ton of plays. He’s the two-time BSC Def. Player of the Year. And he’s got another year to play. D-line is solid and we rotate a number of guys in and out. We’re pretty good on the back end too, but banged up a little. One of our starting corners went down with a shoulder a couple of weeks ago. We have a special teams weapon in LaDarius Hawthorne, who will play the hybrid (LB or Spur) on D but HAS to be accounted for in the kicking game as well. He’s blocked 3 FGs this season, two of which either turned a game around or won the game. Guy just makes big plays for us.

Kicking game solid with PK Alex Catron (1st team BSC) and P Austin Cain. Mid-season we found a KOR guy in Devin Brown, who brought one back 95 vs VMI and ate up a couple of other teams with big returns. PR guy is Niccolo Mastromatteo, very sure hands and has been known to break one or two. He's one of our wideouts too.

Coaching – Joe Moglia was hired in Dec 2011 and has turned things around quickly. Players have bought in to the BAM (Be a Man) philosophy and they’re tough and disciplined. We don’t beat ourselves with silly penalties or turnovers (12 TO in 13 games). And if we get behind, we don’t panic or lose composure. We were 19 down at Liberty with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd Q, only to rally and tie with 44 seconds left. Then won it in double OT.

Looking forward to making the trip to see how we match up with the Griz! (and to eat a BIG steak as well)

Hop Henderson is a great name! Sounds like he should be playing in a leather helmet for the '28 Georgia Tech team.

Oh, every game "worries" me to a certain extent. It should. Watched a few of their games now, they might give us a run for sure but you know how it is when these teams from very different conferences meet up. Might be some surprises. (good or bad) I don't care how much the cold weather is downplayed, it's going to be a negative factor for them more than us. Their running backs really should be practicing with a ball carved out of stone this week.....oh, and then put in the freezer for a couple of hours, that's what I meant to say, frozen football carved out of stone. I surely wouldn't count The Chants out of handing us an upset but I'm thinking it's unlikely.

Maybe they should practice with a frozen chicken

Double Front Chicken would be a better option.

Or the Chicken dinner at The Shack on Main St. Is really good.

Just like every southern team except for the triple option Woford team in '07. The CCU team will get blown out by the Griz. I saw their game on Saturday they looked very slow and they were not very athletic. Their Defense was not very physical either. I'm saying 54-17 with CCU scoring 10 late in the game.

Dick, I also saw the game on Saturday and came to a different conclusion. They emphasize the passing game but run a balanced offense. They didn't appear slow, Bethune-Cookman's defense did. Their running game was efficient and we'll have to shut it down. Yet primarily the CC wide receivers spent much of the day running past the B-C defensive backs, catching the ball and on into the end zone. It is easy to see why they are a high scoring team. Our Grizzly defense will have to play a great game. I expect a Montana win but there is no reason to believe this will be a blow out. :ugeek:

Yes ball security will be a big issue for CC..I would imagine about 2 fumbles lost. That frozen rock is much different this time of the year...also making cuts on the frozen turf is much more difficult..you have to keep your legs under you and stand much more straight up and down. Really slows a guy down... their Defense looks small all across the board..especially at linebacker and D end....we should be able to wear them down by the forth with our big OLine.

Prospective Defensive Starters:

DT #50 Jeffery Salley 4 5'8" 265 lbs.

Holy crap! Is that for real? That dude could plug both gaps on either side of C at once!

Ball security is a good point. CC has lost only 4 fumbles, although had 10. We'll see if the cold impacts their ball security.

That B-C team did seem slow and "un-quick." By that I mean, not only did they not seem to have a lot of all-out speed, but some of them looked like they were playing in galoshes. (That's not to say they didn't have anybody with good speed and quickness ... just not a lot.)

But that's the rub. Was B-C really that slow overall, or were the CC players really, really fast? Probably a bit of both. But let's face it, as a tiny (3,400 students) HBCU deep in Florida, Beth-Cook is going to get mostly the second or third tier of recruits. They will be strong and have good general athletic skills ... but the strong, athletic, and fast/quick kids will end up at Miami, FSU, Central Florida, etc. etc.

I'm sure the coaching staff is approaching this game just like any other. On defense stop #15 and make them one dimensioinal and on offense let Jordy do what Jordy does. IMO The Griz are jelling at the right time and will be a very difficult opponent for ccu. I don't care what anyone says it takes some time to get used to playing in 12 degree temps. Montana plays in it during winter conditioning and throughout the season when it presents itself. Unless we implode we should win this game. I'm positve Delaney, the coaching staff, and players will be ready for this one.

Go Griz!!

I don't think CCU will be able to handle the bitter cold weather in the forecast. My predicition is that they will turn over the ball. I think the Griz will roll in this one. I will be rooting for you guys!
