It would help if he took some input, rather than act on his own impulse from a DII candidate telling him what he wants to hear. Haslam is not a football guru, he needs to take and sort knowledgeable input and not rely on his own instincts.AZGrizFan said:Haslam also hired DeCuire, the softball coach, and some others who have been home runs. I don't think you throw the baby out with the bathwater....IMHO.
Otherwise, his AD performance gets an A in my book. Scheduling, fund-raising, capital improvements, etc. Smart, impressive persona.
Kem,
I have read his instincts took him to pursue Beau Baldwin...or perhaps he received advice to do so. He was unsuccessful. But, I liked the effort. You?
I'm okay with talking to Baldwin, but does anyone think it was ever even a remote possibility? Why would Baldwin, whose team was on top of the Big Sky, go to a rival school, at presumably similar pay, when he was trending up and in line for bigger and better FBS jobs? Coming to MT would have just bogged him down, and he wouldn't be at Cal now making big bucks and presumably helping his resume for a big head job. Some people I know think the pursuit was a waste of time and spinning wheels, which Baldwin played along with only to get a raise from EWU.
While I don't blame Kent for going after the guy he thought would be the best hire, that whole situation made us look kinda foolish. Baldwin was never coming here.
