There are 4 primary qualities which a D-Coordinator has to have. If he does not possess any one of these, he will never be a great D-Coordinator. Here are those qualities.
1) Overall Defensive Scheme- This is the base defense which he chooses to employ throughout the season. Some prefer a 4-3, some a 3-4, some prefer a "bend-don't-break" philosophy (Ty), some like a more aggressive philosophy using multiple blitz packages often (Breske).
2) Getting Players To Buy Into Your System
3) Making Game-Time Adjustments
4) Making Crunch-Time Adjustments
I have no real problem with Gregorak's scheme. While I prefer more of the Breske approach, Ty's scheme seems to be working well this season. As for getting players to buy into Ty's system, I think he does an excellent job in this area. I have heard that his defensive players really like him, and play hard for him.
I have been very critical the past two years about Ty's inability to make the necessary adjustments during the game. However, he has done a good job making half-time adjustments in our first two games.
It is the 4th quality that was exposed last Saturday. During the last minute, in a game which will be decided within that time frame, it becomes a chess match between the opposing offensive coordinator, and the defensive coordinator. Last Saturday, what chance would you have given Poly to win the game when they needed about 20 yards to even have a slim chance at a long FG, no time outs, a poor passing game, and only 37 seconds to accomplish it???? We should win 90% of the time under those circumstances.
But Ty allowed Poly to do the only reasonable thing they could do..... gain 5-7 yards on a play, and go out of bounds to stop the clock. They did it once. Then they did it again. Then they did it a THIRD TIME! What did Ty do in the chess match? Nothing. Two time outs, no strategy to stop what Poly was doing. His players are kids out there. They are concentrating on playing their position and not being the one to give up a play to cost UM the game, Ty needs to be the one to inform them of the game-time situation, and the importance of making the tackle in-bounds, and the strategy to do so. He failed miserably in this regard. We should be 2-0, instead of 1-1.
