Alpha is DEAD ON THE MONEY IN HIS ASSESMENT OF JORDAN JOHNSON AND GRIZMAYOR IS A CRACKHEAD! PERIOD! J.J. was going to be on the initial Payton watch list in July. He's a premier FCS QB and in my opinion would have taken the Griz to the national title. Is he DD? of course not, but he's a damn good QB and he has NOTHING to prove on the field to Mayor or anybody else. He already did that.

IF J.J. didn't do what he's accused of and doesn't appeal or win his appeals with Montana, I hope he goes to Portland State, redshirts, and when the Griz finally play the Vikes in 2015, he shoves it straight up UM's ass. IF, it goes down like that, that's one game I won't be butt hurt about losing.

NOW, IF JJ is guilty and truly deserves to be expelled from UM, than good riddance of course. Sadly, we may never know which way is the actual truth.

AND since this is a poll on who the next QB should be, I'm with Growler (for once), UM needs a drop down to get through the next two seasons. Then, maybe McKinney will be the real deal, but I doubt he's ready. IF, it comes down to SSH or GK, I'll take Kemp that this point.

Yes, we've had such excellent luck with drop-down quarterbacks in the past.

Apart from Roper and J Washington (I personally don't count Montana. I never thought he'd get a chance to start, anyways), who didn't work out? Had Swogger had another year, he probably would be in the Craig Ochs echelon of Griz greatness. Dude could flat out throw it.

But seriously, I can't think of another notable example in the recent past that didn't work out.

MANY DONT AGREE, BUT I THINK SWOGGER WORKED OUT JUST FINE. HE HELPED THE GRIZ TO THE SEMIS IN A YEAR WHEN LEX TORE HIS ACHILLES IN FALL CAMP. THE RUNNING BACKS WERE BRADY GREEN AND A FRESHMAN TBF. I WAS DAMN PLEASED THE GRIZ GOT TO THE SEMIS THAT YEAR.

There's no good scenario in which a drop down QB shows up three weeks before the first game of the season and saves the day. If that's the best way forward, you can forget a winning record in September.
It would have been better to have groomed another QB for the starting job in the spring and just sat JJ for the entire month.
Now you have a couple QBs doing 7 on 7 for a couple months during which all their coah can do is observe from a skybox. No input until fall camp.
Gerald Kemp will not be the starter. If JJ didn't pass the purity test there is no way RE allows a kid who got tazed at a party just hours after touching down from a long road game. Q is a high profile job, no way RE trusts it to a guy with proven poor judgement.

Even if we do get a drop down, will he be good enough or will he have enough time to be ready? I think people that are holding out hope for someone to fall in to our laps this summer and be able to "save our season" will be dissapointed. It is very difficult to come in during the summer, have just a few months to learn a playbook, and learn how to play with new players. It is why most dropdown QBs transfer before spring semester (ask EWU). I remember how excited people were when Roper transfered here a couple of summers ago, saying that he was the surefire starter. He struggled and lost out to a kid many didn't think was ready or talented enough to play at the BSC level. Craig Ochs had the luxury of redshirting a year, practicing in the spring, getting comfortable with the players, and then playing at a high level. It was key to his ability to play at a high level his first year here.

ochs didnt redshirt at montana..he was often injured his first season and i'll never forget the shot he took late in the playoff loss to western illinois. but he didn't redshirt.

griz4life...what if i told you i have it on fairly good authority that GK will be named a captain next season? what does that do to your theory of him not being allowed to play? G$ is one of the biggest heart players on the tean coming back next season and is HIGHLY respected by every player and coach in that lockerroom. you are about as off base with that crap as anything i've seen posted here in a long time!

Yep. He didn't. But he decided to transfer an entire year before he played here and was able to start competing during spring ball. Thats the point I was trying to make and it does make a huge difference.

Slow down. I didn't say he wouldn't be allowed to play. Heck, GK played a lot last year. He just wasn't a starting QB. I'm sure his heart is big and his mother loves him.
I didn't say his coaches or teammates disrespected him. I said it was unlikely Royce Engstrom would turn such a high profile position as starting QB over to person like Gerald Kemp, who lacked the sense of responsibility to just go home and go to bed after returning late from a road trip to Flagstaff. And instead decided to attend a post midnight bash wherein he was tazered and arrested by Missoula Police. I could be wrong, but Royce Engstrom seems to be very concerned about the University of Montana's image. If he throws Jordy Johnson out of school, it really doesn't make any sense to replace him with another kid who has had bad press. The president seems to be very interested in Griz football these days. I'll bet "Gee Money" won't get to be starting QB without Engstrom's input.
It would be remarkable if a humble, all heart guy like "Gee Money" went from not really being seriously considered at QB in the spring to starter in the fall. That would be a heck of a tale. I just don't think it's going to happen.
But hey, the coaches and players respected Jordan Johnson, too. And that meant a lot

When did Royce start making personnel decisions for the football team? I thought Delaney was the coach?
