Q & A with Larry K.

"Yeah, I mean I'm on a one-year contract. I didn't sign up for multi years. The same commitment I'm given is the commitment I'm providing in return."

He basically said that he'd feel more obligated to stay if we gave out multiyear deals.

Griz Admin should learn to read between the lines. I think we all need to let king George and jim O'Day know how we feel about our coaches.

Read between the lines nothing. That was the truth. That was a chest pass you heard buzzing right by somebody's ear. UM has a good one right now, a real rising star. I think coach K will definately be moving on to coach at a university in a power conference within five years. He can do a lot more for this program in that ammount of time IF UM takes steps to ensure that he does not leave sooner. For someone with Krystkowiak's experience, talent, and value to this program, a one year contract is a slap in the face. UM has the personnel to take this program up a few notches or more. It all depends on what kind of future they want to invest in.

O'Day knows very well how everyone thinks about LK, and he is probably his biggest cheerleader. He also knows that he has to do everything HE CAN do to keep him. However, he has a limited budget to work with. If we come up with more money for LK and staff, it will have to be from either a private source (which they continue to work on), or from Main Hall.

And I don't think Main Hall is going to write a check to give all of the coaches a significant bump.

LK will move on, whether it is this year or next. And when he does, it won't be anyone in the athletic department's fault.

I was saying the same as you, just trying to be nice about it. I agree with everything you say. That being said, if we were to get the program to that level, who is to say he might not stay. Few has passed some big time offers up.

If we let him get way, it will be everyone's fault, including the Athletic Dept. How can we just dismiss it as that is the way things are, or it's no one's fault? We wouldn't have WaGriz had it not been for some people with vision, dreams, drive. We need the same approach with our coaches or we will continue the revolving door.

isn't it still up to the state governing body that oversees all that crap and only allows the one year contracts.

perhaps someone could run for office on the platform of multi year deals for coaches...
if it was GB1 i'd vote for him, cuz his possy would be the same individuals he post in the men's room.

if it is up to an oversight committee or board of regents or whatever, then there is some hardcore lobbying to be done. how can UM expect to be competitive on a consistent basis with mid-major teams if there isn't a vote of confidence given to the coaches?

You can't fund ongoing expenses (like salaries) with one-time money. So don’t expect private money to solve this problem. The university system is going to have to decide if competitive sports programs are a priority…or not. If not, we’ll continue in the tradition of keeping good coaches for a few years, then watching them leave for Utah State, Stanford, Michigan State, Wyoming, etc.

An absolute great quote, Larry's honestly is very appealing.

Good and correct points. We could pay Krysko $500,000 and he will still move on at some point for the challenge. Money doesn't have much to do with his particular situation. It could however, with another person at the helm. But face it, were just a rung on the ladder in the basketball world. We shouldn't pretend or expect to be the final stop for any ambitious coach.

Perhaps I wasn't clear in my first post GB1. The power to keep LK around is not within the Athletic Department. After all, there is only so much you can do within your budget. The only people who can keep LK here are those in Main Hall. And that can only be done by making sure the coaches and staff are well taken care of (and I don't mean by Missoula standards). There is no reason that our coaches should not be at the top of the pay scale for the Big Sky Conference, at a minimum. We supposedly have the top programs, and the top facilities. But our coaches' pay ranks in the bottom half of the conference. That is a joke.

While it costs a lot to run, the athletic department and teams generate a HUGE amount of positive advertising and exposure for the university. It is time for the administration to recognize that, while the athletic department will never pay for itself on a direct "dollar out, dollar in" basis, the cumulative effect to the university is worth much more.

Finally, on my previous comment about private money funding salaries, it would have to be through some sort of endowment to insure that the money would be there year in and year out. The other problem with this is that the current administration has not hesitate to cut back on the funding from Main Hall when the athletic department is able to raise money privately. In other words, the more the department raises, the less they get from Main Hall. That is fairly hard for me to justify too.
