Punt Return Blocking

Watching the replay, and on both of the first two UNC punts our line just releases and really doesn't block their guys at all....4-5 UNC guys running free from the snap and teeing off on JLM. In fact on the 2nd one he fumbled and lucked out and recovered it himself. That does NOT seem like a recipe for success....

Yeah, for god's sake, all he needs are a couple of blocks and he can do the rest by himself practically. Just don't let the gunners run free at him--he's too damn fearless for his own good.

On the one JLM fumbled the Griz D stayed out there and were in coverage “safe.” That’s the returner’s cue to fair catch it since you have no blockers. Jerry didn’t and you saw what happened.

It wasn't just the gunners either...the four guys dead in the middle all ran free as well..

Yep...and some credit should go to punter as well. A good high punt that doesn't "out kick" the coverage will likely result in a fair catch or smashed returner. There's a reason you see so many penalties on return teams, damn hard to block guys. He should have fair caught it....and I am sure was told so after.

Also I am sure that was why was still in late in game returning....sure handed fair catching with no plans on taking risks

Whoever their #11 is, was in JLM's face on both these kicks. He got to JLM completely untouched. Can only attribute that to poor Griz blocking!

I think their number 11 was their kickoff returner and receiver. So I would assume he is pretty quick as well.

Credit to UNC, they obviously saw the JLM return the prior week and decide to mitigate him by motioning their gunners. I hadn't seen any prior UNC games this season, does anybody know if they always employ such large splits between their o-line on punts? It seemed to me that the splits almost encouraged an untouched Griz rush while allowing UNC to get downfield quicker to cover the return.

I never played the game, and may be way off base. The last team I remember having such large splits on the o-line was the 1998 Southern Utah team who defeated the Griz in Missoula behind the duo of Cannon and Madsen running the option.

What a relief to know that even tho the Griz can wallop their opponent, there is always something to bitch about.
