PSA -- Don't buy your Griz Gear at the M Store or Scheels

I don't know how many people caught this tidbit in another thread, but The M Store is owned by the MSU Bookstore. Every dollar spent there not only leaves Missoula, but goes to fund the rivals. Scheels gave a $5,000,000 to the Bison to build their basketball stadium.

I'm not saying that either is evil or anything, but just a PSA that Griz gear money is going to rival teams. I'll be going with The University Bookstore or UpTop in the future.

I'm pretty sure isn't the MSU Bookstore that owns it, but the MSU Bookstore and the M store has the same owners. Owners had MSU Bookstore first, then bought M store.

The MSU Bookstore is owned by MSU Bookstore Inc., which is a 501c3 owned and operated by students and faculty of MSU. UM's bookstore had a similar ownership structure when I was a student, but it has since changed hands several times (Barnes and Noble, briefly, now Follett). Their non-profit owns the M Store as a for-profit business to help fund their overall operations.
While I find MSU Bookstore Inc's mission to lower the cost of educational materials for MSU students to be quite admirable, your best bet for Griz gear will always be the University of Montana Bookstore.

That is interesting. I did a little more digging, the MSU Bookstore is a non-profit organization with the sole mission of lowering cost of course materials for MSU students. The 501(c)(3) that is the MSU bookstore, is in itself the entity that owns The M Store, operating it as a for-profit entity with the profits from The M Store being used to offset lowering cost of attendance for MSU students.

I now know more than I ever wanted to about the MSU Bookstore over the last week.

Beat me to it while I was posting. Thank you for clarifying.

I'll be damned.

The products at either UM Bookstore and Scheels are substandard anyway. That is reason enough.

Scheels is great, but I refuse to buy griz gear there. No but hell no from the M store.

Well if you would rather support a corporate giant, Walmart usually has stuff as well. JCPenney always did back in the day but I have no clue about currently... Seems like most every place is owned by corporate so there's really no perfect answer here.

I don’t do “Fanatics” due to its radical agenda, and what about those of us who don’t trust online shopping? Is UM just leaving us out to dry?
Do you use your credit card when you go to the store to buy things or do you pay cash for everything?
