Program Talk

UMGriz75

Well-known member
Mick Holien sums this up nicely about Coach Tinkle:

"And while the time will come at some time in March to further celebrate that 74th league win here in the middle of his seventh season, the time is now to talk about what has occurred with men’s hoop – no matter what happens in the near future – because it is an amazing story.

"Tinks has enjoyed success with dominant centers, prolific take-over scorers, depth and balance and even some times with smoke and mirrors.

"Like every program Montana has suffered through its share of injuries, some of which completely altered the starting lineup or any semblance of depth, yet it seems because of the program he has built with the type of players who chose to come here, when it is another’s turn they’re ready to step up and be counted.

"While he will be quick to defer to his assistants and his players or anyone except himself, the buck stops at his desk and on his shoulders.

"His kids graduate. They enjoy their name and photos on the inside not the front pages of the newspaper. They complement their teammates. They’re polite, helpful and yet make no mistake yet fun-loving."

Meanwhile,

"Since the start of the 2010-’11 season, 11 players have left the MSU program for various reasons, among them dismissal, academic ineligibility or NCAA rules violations. That includes at least four walk-ons. Huse welcomed nine new players to the roster in 2010, seven in 2011 and eight this season."

Sigh. I know i will get hammered for this, but I think it has to be said. Sorry for the rant.

I am not such a fan of Mick, and his blog post above is a good example. His writing is bearly readable, and his facts are often wrong. He is more interested in writing poetry than telling a story - style over substance. Unfortunately his announcing is the same. I know I am in the minority here, and that Griz fans love him because he loves the Griz, and because they are familiar with his style. I would prefer someone who is more interested in the game than the person telling us about the game.

an example of his wrong facts:

His kids graduate. They enjoy their name and photos on the inside not the front pages of the newspaper.

Well unfortunately the men's basketball program had the lowest graduation rate of any athletic program at UM, at only 33% in the latest year measured. Wayne himself did not graduate from College until 16 years after he finished his playing career at UM, after he was told he needed a college degree if he ever wanted to be a head coach.

As far as the arrests, the basketball program has had its' share the past few years as well, including Vaughn Autry after he left the program. The football program was recently in paper because some former players were arrested. There have been others, but I don't have any interest in detailing them.

I know it sounds like I am being negative towards Tinkle, and that is not how I mean it. But there is a danger in putting things in pedestals, whether the program, the coach or the players. The higher they are the bigger the fall, and I am not interested in seeing this program or Coach Tinkle fall. There are lot's of goods things about this program, the players and Coach Tinkle, there are also areas to improve, and issues that are no different than anywhere else. We don't need to make the program out to be something it isn't.

Sorry, end of rant.

Grizbeer, I believe GrizLA would agree with you on Mick, especially his announcing. The thing is though, he's a radio guy, not a journalist. It's not really his fault that Lee interprises is all "hey, write stuff" and Mick must enjoy it, so that's why he writes. He's not getting paid to write, though. He's getting paid to be "the voice of the Griz."

there's nothing wrong with mick's writing that a good class at the columbia journalism couldn't cure. they'd knock out the awful cliches and the run-on sentences, and they'd school him on proper use of sequence of tenses. or he could simply take this lesson from flaubert: "if you can shorten a sentence, do. and one always can. the best sentence? the shortest."

as for his announcing, he does have a good voice. that's something.

F- based on your failure to use capital letters.

You would be wrong there. I simply don't like tv announcers that go over the top in support of the home team and since there is no alternatives offered, I just turn off the sound...I DO enjoy anyone who is a fan of the Griz, lord knows, these days, there is little to be cheering about up there...so, more power to Mick, whoever he is....he serves a good cause in his style...good for him...no one forces me to listen, and I don't..but most do and appear to like it...hey, if we were all alike in our preferences, we would be Utah.
